MINING NEWS. Grahamstown, Saturday.

Kuranui Company. — An improvement in this mine is reported, bod the probabilities are in favour, of a better yield during the current fortnight, as compared with that of the last. This is to be attributed tu the jfhpfc )6f fcome branch leaders lately' opened near the surface turning out .good stone, and also that good stone is being obtained from the 20-fathom level, in the leader that ■ is making for the Eureka boundary. iAi l statement has been going the rounds here to the effect that this . level of the Kuranui j mine was to bo contiuued id to the Eureka ground! as far 1 as > the shaft, for the purpose of tapping the jWatjer, .which has accumulated in the latter. Mr. Rdrnick, the manager, however, informed me this morning that he had no intention of doing so, as the risk of danger to his workmen and also of injury to tho drives, in the event of the water, which stands 100 feet high, suddenly breaking throughjweuld be too great. , Shotover Company.— The tributers retorted to-day after crushing for nearly three weeks, and obtained 80oz. of retorted gold. Bird in Hand. — This morning ground was broken preparatory to sinking the shaft, which is to be nine feet long by four feet wide. The work has been let on contract, aud is to be pushed on without delay. The Prince Alfred Machine has during i the past ten days undergone a thorough I overhaul and repairs. The old stamperI boxes of the heavy battery have been replaced by new ones, and those of tho light battery have been lifted and re-beddod, whilst the tables have received new plates and ripples. The engine and boilers were also looked to. The machine is now in firstrate order, and is crushing for the Caledonian and Inverness mines. Moanataiari Company. — The fortnightly crushing produced 3040z. of retorted gold, obtained as follows :—2370z.: — 237oz. from 250 tons crushed at the company's own mill, and 670z. from 374 tons crushed at the Tramway machine. This discrepancy is remarkable, seeing— as the manager informed me -that the machines were supplied from the same leaders without partiality. The gold was melted at the Bank of New Zealand, and reduced to 2990z. sdwt. Moanataiari Union. — The tributers appear to be doing pretty well, to judge by the quantity of specimens they have taken out of tho leader lately. A nice little patch was met with this morning. Four Georges, Karaka. — Small but steady and payable returns of gold are obtained from this mine, late the Colleen Bawn. This morniug Boz, ldwt., the yield of about ten tons of stone, were banked. American Eagle.— A patcli of good specimens were taken out of the leader last night, and swells the quantity on hand to over Icwt. Tho general stuff in paddock has accumulated to forty tons, and is to be sent to the mill next week. Golden Crown. — The tributers have been working on better stuff during the past fortnight ; the cleaning up to-day resulted in a return of 138oz. 3d\vt. melted gold. — [Correspondent.] 'I he Bihd in Hand.— The directors held their first meeting yesterday, at which they mado a call of one shilling per share. This, together with the respectablo balance in hand, will place the company in a very good position at starting. This is an example that might be followed with advantage by many of the newly-formed companies on this field. In consequence of some of the shareholders having sold part of their interest in tho form of portions of shares, carrying in some instances an indefinite number of scrip, it has been found necessary to insist on the number of scrip shares so disposed of being written in the transfers— a wise precaution that will prevent much confusion which might otherwise arise. Scanbin vvian. — The directors met yesterday for the (iist time since the amalgamation with the Nightingale Goldmining Company was completed. They made a call of sixpence on the whole of tho shares of the amalgamated company (5.500). This will will give them sufficient funds to get out a trial crushing and start bringing in the water-raco to their machine site. The amalgamated companies start clear of liabilities, and with the determination of keeping the shareholder up to the mark in the matter of calls, so as to take all possible ml vantage of the incoming summer. — Adi'i'rt'isc)'.
