There were no inquiries for other stocks. Buyers of Bank of New Zealand and Gas shares." Mr. J. Tonson Garlick reports sales this day :— « Caledonian, 137?. 10s, 135?., 132?. 10*, and 130?.; Thames, 25?. and 25/. 10s; Moan&taiari, 80s ; Alburnia, 5?. 15s to 6?. ; Tokatea, 5?. ; Nonpareil, Ql. ; Otago, 80s. Golden Calf, buyers, 55i ; Central Italy buyers, 605." - Mr. Edgar W. Walker reports :—'• The vlutranarket has been dull to-day, with prices fi*«tuating. lihave sold — Caledonian, 140?. ; 133 J., 138J.J Thames, 251. 10s; Una, 20s; Central Italy, 52s 6d ; Tookey, 3H." MeiSrs. Scott and Co. report: — "Business in the sharemarket almost at a standstill, with scarcely any transactions in

outside stock, Caledonian receded from 135?. to 132/. Thames shares do not fluqtuate so much, but remain steady nt 26/. and 25/. Otago, 80s ; Central Italy, 52a 6d. Buyers of Alburnia (at 5/. 15s), Kelly, and Belfast." Mr. G. Bennett reports sales '. — "Caledonian, 135/. to 130/. ; closing sellers, 130/. Thames, 26/. ; Alburnia, 5/. ss, to 5/. 7s Oil ; Nonpareil, 61." Tookey. — Tookey shares are quoted in the Melbourne Aryus of the 9th as having changed hands at 28/. 10s. '

Melbourne.— The Argus of September 9 reports :— •" Flour is simply unsalable save in the most trifling bakers' parcels, and for the supply of pressing wants only ; we quote 15/. to 15/. ss. Wheat is likewise very dull, though moved off with much less difficulty than floi: t \ A shipment of 500 bags Adelaide wh^at was cleared off at 6s 2d to 6s 3d in parcels. We also hear of the sale of a very prime parcel of New Zealand— l,2oo bushels — at a full price. Oats are in moderate request ; we learn of the quittance of 2,400 bushels— a good sample— at 3s 6d. Sales of aiaize continue to be effected at up to 4s 3d. Sugars are moving somewhat slowly ; there does not appear to be much interest taken in the market at present. Good white crystals have been quitted at 37/. ta 37/. 10s. Under the hammer some 1,600 bags Mauritius rations were got rid of this forenoon at 22/. 10s to 24/. In teas, we note the disposal of the damaged portion of the 'Eachel's' and I Vision's' cargoes of new season's congous at prices ranging from 12£ d to 2s per lb. net. Candles have met with a better inquiry, but the sales effected have not been of much extent ; a few parcels have found buyers at lid for best brands. The market has of late | been very barely supplied with quicksilver, and the price in consequence has risen to an extreme figure ; we observe, however, that the California mail steamer, lately arrived, has brought forward for this port 300 bottlea, and we further learn that arrangements have been entered into to keep up a regular supply in future. In liquids, we note an inquiry for 1 Hennessy's case brandy at 26s 3d to 26s 6d, according to quantity. Messrs. Fraser and Co. sold 640 packages tea, all more or less damaged by sea water, which realised from 13 o^d to 2s per lb., in bond, for net cash." Adelaide. — Wo have papers to the 4th. From the South Australian Advertiser of that date we clip the following: — "Business in the import market has undergone little alteration during the week, trade having been generally quiet. Cornsacks remain quiet ; but we hear of a trade parcel having been sold at 12s 6d. Wheat, 4s lid to 4s 11 |d ; flour, town, 13Z. to 13Z. 5s ; flour, country, 11/. 5s to 11/. 15s; bran, 7£d; pollard, 10|d to Is ; barley, Cape, Is lOd to 2s ; barley, English, 2s 3d to 3s 6d ; oats. 2s to 2s 6d ; oata, English, 2s 6d to 4s. — A meeting of merohantsand others interested in the wheat trade was held on Saturday to take measures for relieving the market here by the shipment of a considerable quantity of breadstuff's to England. The meeting was of a private character, but we learn that the desirableness of the object was affirmed, and that a committee was appointed to carry it out." Hobart Town. — The Mercury of the Ist reports as follows: — "Trade continues remarkably dull, the only transactions being for the supply of local wants. Flour continues to be quoted by the millers at 13/. per ton, i nd parcels of wheat are offering at 5s 8d to 5s 9d, but the agents are not disposed to sell at these quotations. For other articles the prices are : Sharps, 7/. per ton ; bran, lid per bushel; feeding oats, 2s 6d ; seed oats, 3a to 3s 3d ; malting barley, 3a to 4s 9d ; potatoes without bags, 2/. 15s per ton. There is a moderate demand for green fruitB for exportation. The bushel case of French crabs sells at 4a 3d ; that of stone apple 3 at 4s 6d ; dessert apples, however, are in request at about 6s per case. In the timber market there is moderate demand for exportation at the following rates : — sft. palings, 5s 6d to 7s per 100 ; Oft. palings, 7s to 8s Gd ; posts and rails, 20s to 23s per 100 ; New Zealand pine, 14s to 16s per 100." Launceston.— The Cornwall Chronicle of August 30 reports :— " Business in the grain and flour market is again depressed this week, but quotations are nominally about the same as last week. Flour for home consumption, 11/. to 11/. 10s per ton ; wheat, 5s 3d ; oats, 2s 4d to 2a Gd ; English barley, 33 6(1 per bushel ; bran, 3/. per ton ; fine sharps, 7/. 10s per ton ; coarse sharps, 5/." Oamvru.— The Times of September 12 reports :— " There are no transactions to report, and prices remain nominal, farmeis still evincing a disposition to hold, and buyers a [reluctance to givo the pi ices demanded. The news of a still further decline in the Adelaide market gives evidence that stocks on hand there are btill heavy. We quote best wheat at 4s 6d ; inferior or sprung, totally unsalable. Oats, dull :2s would be attainable for really good samnles, but most of those offering are discoloured, and all are very badly cleaned. Barley, none. Flour, 14/. ; oatmeal, 15/. ; pollard, 41. ; bran, 3/. Potatoes are inquired for at 353 to 21." Dunedin. — The Daily Times ot September II reports: — "In wines and spirits there has been but little doing. Brandies remain at last quotations, and, as has been the ease all through, tixt season, only moving in parcels of limited extent. In sugar? there has not been much business, except the auction sale of the shipment per ' Tien Esser ' on the oth. Since that date the few transactions coming under observation have shown sustained rates. In teas the sales have also been limited, buyers waiting for the now season's congous, of vhich a few lots via Melbourne are already in the market. The business will probably remain small till direct shipments are to hand. Though no operations of any note are reported in Dundee goods, there is an inclination to business, even at slightly improved rates. Holders of hemp goods look for an immediate advance on woolpacks, but not for an equally rapid improvement in cornsa?ks. Malfc liquors in bottle continue in good inquiry, and the small shipments arriving pass from importers' hands quickly. In kerosine small transactions have taken place at 2s 2d. Theieis an indisposition to large purchases, but importers refuse to take any under this rate. Candles move slowly at an average quotation of ll{d. Several items in light grocery goods and oilmen's stores move more freely, a? may now be expected ; but rates show no changes. The produce market has been inanimate all through the week, the late advices from the Australian markets rather adding to the depression than otherwise. In flour, only small transactions for immediate requirements have taken place ; the quotations are nominally 13/. 10s to 14/., for best town brands."
