Mb, Alfjred Buck land's Report. -At the 11 ay market on Saturday last hay was in less than usual supply, and prices advanced ; best quality brought ss. tho cwt. Horse stock wore also in less numbers than usual; all brought forward were sold at better prices than have lately ruled.—At Waiuku on WeJnesday there was an indifferent muster of cattle, and they were in very low condition. Prices were lower than those ruling at Bemu era ; all penned were sold.—At Itemuera on Thursday dairy cattle were plentiful, and in better request; an advance of about 30s per head on late markets was obtained. Cows of average quality ranged from 11, to 91. each; 15-mouths-old cattle, 21 12s 6d and 2L 15s ; three-year-old, 41. 158 to 51. 15s each. Fat cattle were many of them of medium quality, but offered more numerously than for severul weeks ; 148 penned, and all sold freely at an advance of fully 2a 6d the 1001b. over last week's market, A few choice cattle realised 37s Gd, but tho greater number brought from 30a to ',35s the 1001b. Fat sheep were in very short supply, and extreme prices were obtained for them. Pigs were numerous, but of middling quality Jonly; they were in demand at late

fully prices. Messrs. Hunter and Nolans Report.— Horses: There was a good supply, aud, although the stamp was not the description in request, above the average in number and value were disposed of. There is a good demand for young, staunch draught horses, and we could have placed several at prices in favour of the seller. There is also an unsatisfied inquiry for medium draught stock, Cattle : There has been an improved supply of most descriptions. Dairy cows were not very numerous nor yet of first-rate description. Some very fair stores offered, and were disposed of at prices which show a marked upward tendency. Fat beasts were in better supply, prices for provincial being very firm; while those ex ' St. Kilda,' from Whanganui, which were very prime when shipped, but owing to a protracted passage did not show to advantage, were well competed for. We quote beef from 27s 6d to 30s the 1001b. At Waiuku, on Wednesday, there was a poor muster, and the prices were very low. The wet weather, and the almost impassable state of the bush roads, as well as the difficulty of getting cattle out of the bush, prevented several lots from coming forward, and also acted detrimentally on the sale of those penned. Sheep : There was a moderately good supply. There was keen competition, and last week's prices were fully maintained. Those ex ' St. Kilda,' of inferior quality, sold at from 10s 9d t« 20s 6d ; while some very prime pens from Taranaki realised as high as Gd per lb. Pigs : Few penned ; sales nominal.

Melbourne.—Per s.s. «Claud Hamilton,' to Hokitika, we have Melbourne files to August 2. The Argus reports :— •" Breadstuns are from being animated, considerable difficulty being experienced in making sales. Flour is steadily quoted at 16/. for best Melbourne town brands ; secondary brands of Adelaide are offering at 15/. 15s, without meeting with any favourable response. Wheat is quoted at from 7s to 7s 2d for best Adelaide; few buyers, however, show any inclination to operate to any extent in the market. Under the hammer, inferior ]Sew Zealand wheat sold at 5s 2d ; and a prime parcel offered at same time was withdrawn tor 5s Gd. Oats are very dull for low qualities, but fine are .more salable; wo quote 3s 4d to 3s 7d. Maize is selling at 3s Sd to 3s 9d, according to quantity, 1,200 bushels New Zealand barley was quitted at from 2s lOd to 3s Id. The cargo of Lombok rice, per 'African Maid,' about 160 tons in all, was cleared off by auction this forenoon, at 122. 15s to 13?. 15s. Candles are not so much looked after. Some 600 boxes were got rid of by auction at 10£ d to 10|d. Teas obtain a fair amount of attention; 2,501 half-chests were sold publicly at 12=fd to Is Bd, and a small parcel of S.O. pekoe was placed at 8d to Is 4d. There has been a good inquiry for sugars, though the actual business reported is trifling. Fine yellows are quitted privately at 35/. 10s. An attempt was made to sell China sugar publicly, which did not prove successful. Only one line of very low rations was taken up at 24/. 309 faulty tens tobaccos were got rid of at the extreme figures of Is 2d to Is 2£d net."

OrAGO.—The Daily Times of August 7 reports :—"There have during the last day or two been one or two fair-sized parcels of ■ congous placed, medium in halves realising i Is SSid to Is 9d, and in boxes equal to Id higher. Sugars are quiet, and all liquid goods dull. The produce market has shown but a meagre amount of transactions ; and on the whole values look weaker. The town millers now quote £14 10s for fine flour, and are disinclined to buy wheats, except in trifling lots. The value of good grinding wheats may still be taken at 5s 6d. Oats have been selling in light parcels at 2s 2d to 2s 3d, for fair feeding samples; but, owing to continued unfavourable advices, there is no stir in the export trade. A small lot of good malting barley was moved at 3s lOd, but there is scarcely any provincial offering, and the demand has to some extent fallen off."

Oamarix.— The Times of August 8 reports : —'•Quotations for wheat (4s 7d to 4s 9d) are merely nominal, owing to the indisposition of buyers to operate, in view of the decline in the Melbourne market. We believe, however, that there will shortly be a steady demand, though we question whether there will be any impiovement upon recent quotations in this market, as, prices in Timaru ranging from 4s 2d to 4s 3d, buyers for export find it more profitable to operate there. Oats are in no demand here, best milling being obtainable in Dunedin at prices equal to 2s 2d net. Barley: The only demand is for quality suitable for malting purposes, of which there is none on offer. Flour, 15/. (nominal), millers evincing a disposition to quit at a lower figure. Oatmeal, 15/., demand slack. Bran, SI. (nominal). Pollard, 4/., in better demand." Canterbury.— The Press of August 10 contains the following auction report: — "Produce : Flour : Millers' brand, 15/. per ton ; farmers' gristing, 9/. to 12/. der ton ; sharp 3. best brand, hi. ; medium, 4/. 10s ; bran, 3/.; pollard, 41. 10s to 51. Wheat: Best millers' quality, 5s 6d per bushel; chicken wheat, 2s to 3s per bushel. Barley : Malting qualities, none offering; barley suitable for crushing or fowl food, from Is 6d to 2s 6d per bushel. Oats ; Canadian, if bright and clean, 2s 4d to 2s 6d per bushel; Tartarian, 2s to 2s 3d; discoloured lots, Is 6d to 2s per bushel. Peas : Good samples. 3s 6d to 4s. Potatoes : Good sound dry Derwents, 2/. los per ton; early seed potatoes, 4a per cwt. Carrots, 25s per ton; mangolds, 20s per ton; hay, Zl. 10s ; hams, good, 7d to 8d; bacon, 63.; inferior bacon, 3d to 5d per Ib.; cheese, good, 4id; inferior cheese, 2d to 3d ; butter, good, 6d to 7d; lard, 3d to 4d." The same journal of the sth says :•—" We have again to report a very dull week, business being far below the average usually noticeable at the commencement of a new month. The demand for spirits has, in consequence of the increased consumption of the winter months, been slightly better. Brandies are held for higher rates. Henneasy's has been quitted during the week at 8s 3d to 8s 6d. C. Y. P. is likewise attracting more favour at 7s 4d to 7s Bd.»
