TEMPERANCE MEETING.
A meeting of the members and friends of the Temperance Society was held last night at half -past 7 o'clock, in the hall of the Young Men's Christian Association. The Rev. Peter Mason occupied the chair. The programme of the meeting consisted of singing temperance songs, speeches, readimgs, &c. The singing is very much improved from what it was a few months ago, when, on one occasion we felt it our duty to criticise it rather severely. Mr. Whitehead gare a reading, followed by an address from Mr. Edwards, who urged the necessity of a thorough organisation amongst the members, and suggested the propriety of forming a cadet corps composed of temperance lads, which suggestion was received with applause. The Secretaryintimated thatmany influential citizens had lately joined their ranks, and said, if the same rate of progress should continue for a few months which they had experienced lately, they would soon exercise a considerable influence in the town. The Chairman intimated that another meeting would be held next Tuesday night, and that the meeting of the Band of Hope would be held on that evening, at 7 o'clock.
