Wreck of the Florence.— The ketch Floren c, owned by John Burgess West, became a total wreck at Te Puru on Wednesday last. She was engaged in the firewood trade. It is the custom to beach these vessels when the wind is blowing off the land, for the convenience of loading. The men in charge did bo on this occasion, but the wind chopped round to the north and north-west. She was loaded at the time, and the tide was rising around her, but before she floated she filled, and became a total wreck by being bumped against the rock on the beach. The men unloaded the vessel, in the hope of saving her, but without effect. The gear and sails were saved, but the hull was destroyed.— An inquiry into the circumstances was held before Mr. D. Lundon, Sub-Collector of Customs, Thames, on Saturday. We understand that Mr. West, owner of the ketch Florence, was also part owner of the ketch Enterprise, which twelve months ago collided with the steamer Tauranga, causing a melancholy loss of life. — Mail.
