TRUTH: AND FALSEHOOD v. JUSTICE AND SCANDAL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— ln answer to "Justice and Scandal," permit me to state that I was, while resident in Montreal, Lower Canada, an intimate friend of Mr. John Monk, barrister-at-law, practising there ; and, upon my throwing a doubt upon the truth of the book published by Maria Mank, he declared to me il was perfectly true, in every sense of the word, for it was his own sister who wrote it. IE any person wishes, he can write to Mr. Monk, and prove the veracity of my statement ; or, by writing to Mr. J. McDougall, he can affirm what I say. Your correspondent says: "Nuns and Jesuits are the usual victims of slander." Why, I ask, should they be, if their deeds were not sometimes to be condemned ? He says also, '•he admires a free Press." Then why, I would ask, is the Press of England and America the freest in the world? I would answer : not because those countries are "Roman Catholic," but because they are catholic and Protestant. — I am, &c, Veritas.
