THE GLADSTONE GOLDMINING COMPANY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — Can you inform me whether the Superintendent has the right to re-enter a company's ground without giving notice to the legal manager ? Being a shareholder in the Gladstone Goldmming Company, I should feel obliged if you would insert the following: — The Gladstone Compauy was formed two years ago by the amalgamation of four claims which had been working almost from the opening of the Thames goldfield. It consists of fourteen men's ground, i 3 duly registered, and has a lease for twenty one years. It haa been kept working, several calls were made, and, with few exceptions, punctually paid by the shareholders. Last February there was a meeting, at which, the accounts were audited and passed. About the sth May last there was another meeting, Mr. John Goodall, chairman, when it was resolved to make a call of one shilling per scrip, and to work upon the Golden Age leader ; it was also stated at that meeting that the mine was increasing in value. The call was due on the 23rd May on wbieh day several sent in the money, I amongst them. Over £90 were paid in. The directors had previously advertised for and accepted tenders to carry on the work of the mine, and not less than six men were to be on the ground at a time ; they had also two men working. When the Superintendent's messenger took possession on the afternoon of Saturday! the 27th May, the company's men were working the mine, and had been 80 for «qm» d*y«* I may adso auto

that the reasons that nearly three montki elapsed without working were the death of one director, a serious accident to another, and the severity of the weather during March and April. The manager, Mr. Par* cival, states that in all other cases tho Superintendent had given him notice previous to makiDg a re-entry. In the Gladstone case no notice whatever was given, and the contents of the Gazette, containing the re-entry, were telegraphed to the Thames before there was time for th«m toba published. If the Superintendent, has tht right bo re-enter a registered company* £?round without giving notice, there is not a company safe on the Thames, and th« sooner it is made puhlic the better. — I am, to., A Shabbholdxk. .
