POLICE COURT.— Saturday. [Before Thomas Beckham, Esq., R. M.]

Drunkenness. — Five persons for this offence were each fined in the usual manner.

Desertion. —George Waller, a deserter from H.M. s. ' Blanche, ' was again remanded, for a week.

H.OBBERY. — John and William McGialey were charged with sticking up Solomon JFreedman on the highway on July 28. Mr. Bennett for the prosecution, and Mr. John Sheehan for the defence. — Mr. Bennett applied for au adjournment of the case till Monday. — Mr. Sheehan asked that bail he allowed for the prisoners. — The Bench did not consider that bail could be allowed, but adjourned the case till Monday.

Larckny.— George Graham was again brought up charged with breaking into and stealing from the premises of Dora Mayne. — The case was, on the application of Mr. Broham, remanded till Tuesday.

Breach of Licensing- Act. — Joseph Trimble was charged with allowing liquor to be soU on his premises contrary to the provisions of the Act. Mr. Beveridge and Mr. Itees for the defence. — Sergeant Egan, being sworn, said : The defendant is the proprietor of the Oriental Hotel. On Sunday, July 16, I proceeded to his hotel. Detective Ternahan and Sergeant Walker accompanied me. I got into the hotel about a quarter to ten, by the back door. There were several persons in a room behind the bar. There were ale and porter in the glasses on the table. The landlord and his barman were also present. — By Mr. Beveridge : I did not see any of them drinking. I had nothing to drink. It was ale that was in the glasses. (Three bottles produced. ) I cannot say ale is in any one of those bottles. I did not taste or smell the liquor. — George McLeod, being sworn, said : I reside at Coromandel. On Sunday night, 16th instant, I was in the Oriental Hotel ; another man went with me. I had a glass of sarsaparilla and giDgerbeer. I don't know what the others had. The landlord asked me to stop there that night and be lodgers, as the police had been there. — Patrick Duffy, fireman of the ' Golden Crown,' said : On the Sunday night in question, I went to the Oriental Hotel. I had a glass of ale to drink. I had called for another when the policeman came in. I stop on board the vessel. After the policeman came in I engaged a bed.— James Cecil deposed to having been in the Oriental Hotel on the Sunday night. — The Resident Magistrate dismissed the case, but stated thpt from the evidence given he certainly did not consider that the defendant was fit any longer to hold the license of an hotel, and he hoped the Inspector would not forget him at the next licensing meeting. — In answer to a question respecting witnesses' expenses, the Bench stated that they were not compelled to attend at the Court unless their expenses were first tendered to them.
