SOUTHERN TELEGRAMS.
Hokitika.— July 21 : Ifc {is expected that not half the * Waterman's ' cargo will be saved. She lies on her beam-ends, with the deck seaward, and water is running through her bottom. It is thought her masts will go, and the vessel break up shortly. Packages, including kerosine, are knocked open by the force of the sea. The cargo on board is in a frightful mess. [The vessel was owned by Mr. W. J. Coate3, of Greymouth, who recently purchased it for £2,000.] — The Wednesday's Christchurch coach has not yet arrived.— lt is reported uhat the Otira Gorge Road has been washed away. — July 24 : Arrived — ' Prosperity, 'fiom Melbourne. Sailed — 'Zephyr,' for Newcastle; 'Sarah and Mary,' for Melbourne. — Mr. Mark >Sprot, the well-known cattle-dealer of Ilokitika, is dead. — Some excitement has been caused in Westport by a report brought by some cattle-dealers, to the effect that valuable gold discoveries had been in the River Mangles, a tributary of the Bailer. No less than 16oz of gold was said to have been obtained from a single dishful of dirt taken from the river-bed. — The sum of £32 has been subscribed at Hoss (Westland) for the conditional-pardon prisoners who recently arrived at Lyttelton f rom Western Australia. ■-The gold produce of the Ross district, bought by the three banks during the past six months of this year, ia stated by the Jioss Newts to be 17,2000z., which gives an average yield of £1 per week for every man, woman, and child in the district. — At Greymouth, John Harris, a pawnbroker, has been fined £5 and costs, for having unlawfully charged excessive interest on goods pledged to him.
Whanganul— July 24 : McDonald has been further carged with wilful murder ; he was remanded. The Magistrates' conduct conduct causes great discontent. One Magistrate, a creditor of McDonalds to the extent of £100, insisted on occupying the bench ; and another accompanied the prisoner from the 'gaol to the Court-house. £40 worth more of goods have b^en found secreted.
Wellington— July 20: The Court of Appeal have quashed the conviction in the case of Morton Quin, for larceny. — Twentyfour East Coast rebel prisoners, recently confined here, sailed for Napier by the ( Rangatira/ to be released at Opotiki, under charge of Ropata. — H.M.s. 'Basilisk' arrived to-day from Sydney. — July 24 : Mr. Moorhouse has resigned the office of Registrar-General of Lands, for private reasona.
Dunedik.— July 21 : The polling for the Mayoralty resulted in the re-election of Mr. Fish, by a good majority. Messrs. Birch aud Thoneman were the other candidates.— Flour, fair sale at £15 ; wheat is well supplied, and good milling is worth ss. 9d.; oats, 2s. 3d. to 2s. sd. Barley is unsalable. —An inquest was held at the Police-office, Invercargill, on the body of a newly-born female child, which died on or soon after the day of its birth. The jury, after hearing the evidence, delivered the verdict, ' ' That the aforesaid female child was given birth to by Agnes Walker, on or about the 24th day of June, 1871, and that she concealed the fact. Further, the jury are of opinion that the said child came by its death in consequence of the wilful neglect of its mother." — A sad accident occurred in the Clutha district. Mr. Duncan Ferguson, of Breadalbane, Mnegand, having occasion t© leave home about 8 o'clock in the evening on horseback, and not speedily returning, fears were at once entertained regarding his safety. After a search, the body of the unfortunate man was found in a creek in the vicinity of his own property. It is surmised that the horse had stumbled into the creek, which was much swollen at the time, owing to the recent heavy rains. At the coroner's inquest, held on the Saturday following, a verdict of "Accidentally drowned" was returned. — A trial crushing of the Border Reef, Bendigo, has yielded 41oz. from nine tons of stone. Forty-five tons of quartz, from the Elizabeth Beef, Carrick Range, on being crushed, yielded 540z. — A miner named Hugh McConville has died from injuries received from falling down a shaft at the Kanieri.
Oamaru. — July 17 : The nomination of candidates for the office of Mayor of Oamaru took place to-day. The following candidates were nominated :— Mr. Udall (the present Mayor), Mr. S. E. Shrimski, and Mr. Gr. Sumpter. The show of hands resulted as follows :— Udall, 23 ; Shrimski, 17 ; Sutnp7. The polling takes place on the 21st instant.
Taranaki.— July 26 : Mr. John Knight, sen., M.P.C., who held the honorary office of Provincial Treasurer, has met his death by drowning Prom the evidence taken at his inquest it is supposed that the unfortunate gentleman, being troubled with bleeding at the nose, had gone to the river 'aide to bathe his face, when being faint, he must have fallen in. His body was not recovered till some days after, and an inquest was held, when* verdict of "Accidental drowning" \iras returned. — The -weather is still very boisterous. — As the steamers have hot landed their cjirgo for the last two trips, paper has become very scarce. The Herald only published a half -sheet on Saturday, and the News never appeared at" all.— i Messrs^ Boss,- Hodson, and Co., of. Dunedin, offer to'constnictift railway from Whangariui to New Plymouth,' and to receive payment inland.- A motion has been tabled in!' the Council to* accept the offer. tn ' ""-
