CHESS MATCH.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— I would beg the favour of your insert* iug in your valuable paper the following report of the return cheaa match, West End v. Outsiders, of which you have given notices from time to time. The return match resulted from a written challenge receiyed from Mr. Lusk on. the 2nd May last on behalf of the team who had been defeated in the former contest, fixing the time to commence for the firBt Monday in Jnly, thug allowing a period of two months for study and improvement. A considerable amount of interest was excited in consequence of th« long preparation, and waa sustained throughout the match, the play being on the part of some decidedly superior to their former doings. There were many games played, although they have not been published, that would clearly illustrate this, and it is to b« hoped they will find their way into your chess column in due time. The match was discontinued by mutual consent on Tuesday evening last, on the Club scoring the winning game, as the outsiders found it inconvenient meet except at very long and irregular intervals, and the match was becoming too great a tax on the time of the members o£ the Club. The following is a table showing the games scored by each player for hU respective side :—: —

At the conclusion of the match a proposal was made to form an Auckland Chess Club, or something of the same nature, on/ a wide basis, which was well received, and^a meeting appointed to consider the question. If the formation of the Auckland Chess Club should result from the contest, or an impetus be given to thestudy of thegame, theClub will feel their time well spent, and the chess j public will not be without a lasting benefit derivsd from the match. — I am, Sec, James Morton, Hon. Sec. West End Chess Club.
