ST. MATTHEW'S CHURCH: ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual general meeting of parishioners of Sfc. Matthew's Church was held last night. The chair was occupied by the Rev. D. Jones. The meeting was opened by prayer ; after which the minutes of the previous meeting were read aud confirmed. The annual report was read by the Chairman, embracing a period from tbe 30th June to the 31st December, in consequence of the <sh.a,uge mads at the last aittlng of ike Synod. At the last annual meeting a considerable balance was on hand, which the vestry de« cided to use in extinguishing the debt due on the church, and in order to do this the more readily they thought it right to anticipate the pew-rents, and thus an overdraft was made at the bank, which explained the adverse balance' against the church shown in the abstract of accounts. The fund for the building of the stone church was accumulating rapidly, and it now amounted to £3,717 1 5s. 4d. The Sunday-school was in a very healthy state, but the day-school had suffered a loss by Mr. William Taylor, the former teacher, having been appointed to another sphere of duty. Mr. Charles Taylor had been appointed in his stead. — The report was seconded by Mr. Doonin, and adopted. — Mr. Vickers read the balance-sheet. The income from all sources for the six months was £593 ss. lid. The liabilities on account of the over-draft at the bank were £84 10s. Id.— The statement of accounts was adopted. — The chairman chose Dr. Hooper as minister's warden, and Mr. Vickers was re-elected parishioners' warden. The follow\ng—g«satlena.en. vrero elected vestrymen ; — j Messrs. John Henderson, T. W. Doonin, Burtc, Hamilton, Fleming, Davis, sen., W. Williams, Cameron, K. T. Warnock, and Captain Williams. — Mr. Cadtnan, M.P.C., gave notice that he would move, at the next annual meeting, " That it is the opinion of this meeting that the pew-rents of St. Matthew's Church should be abolished." — Mr. Davis oomplained of the singing by the church choir. — Mr. Vickers moved that the incumbent's salary be the same as last year. — The motion, was agreed to. — The Chairman thanked them for this further mark of their confidence. It was now the third year the parishioners had contributed this addition to his salary. — Mr. Doonin moved that, in future, abstracts of accounts should be printed, and distributed in th« pews of seat-holders on the Sunday before the annual meetings.— Motion agreed to. — On the motion of Mr. Doonin, it was resolved that Messrs. Waymouth, sen., and Dickson »c appointed auditors for the ensuing year. — After votes of thanks to the organist, choir, and chairman had been, passed, the meeting separated.
