ARRIVAL OF THE CITY OF AUCKLAND.

The fine new clipper ship City of Auckland, under the command of our old friend, Captain William Ashby, made her appearance m havbour, for the second time, on Sunday, December 11, after one of the finest runs liom London to'this port that havebeen made tor a long time back, the time occupied being only 81 days from the iUnglish Channel. The City of Auckland brings over 800 tons of general cargo, and 22 chief cabin, 10 second, and 126 steerage passengers. Notwithstanding this large number of passengers the ship has ai rived in harbour a perfect model of cleanliness ; and we are pleased to learn tliat throughout the passage the utmost harmony and good feehng existed amongst all on board, and it was gratifying to hear the passengers speaking in the most glowing terms of the uniform kindness antl untiring exertions put forth by Captain and Mrs. Ashby to promote their happiness. As a proof of the high estimation in which Captain Ashby was held, we may state that a very flattering address has bfeen presented to him. We are sorry to have to record one death that occurred on the passage, that of Miss Emma Fox, aged 23, who died of brain fever on the 10th October, in 6 27 .N. lat , 24-19 W. long. No other sickness occurred. The Three Kings Islands were sighted on December 9, 79 days from the English Channel, 85 days from Gravesend. 10th, off Cape Brett, 6 miles, wind light S. WMW M having run a distance of 15,000 miles from Graveseud, being eight months and twenty-two days since the City of Auckland sailed frovn Auckland. TMs ha? been a fine-weather passage throughout, our topaails only being reefed once, then only for four hours. On the voyage a newspaper was published, for which a small charge was made, aud the proceeds, a considerable sum, is to be given to the funds of the Belvedere Aged Seamen's Institute, London. The following are the best seven days' consecutive running done by the City of Auckland :— First day, 305 miles ; second day, 316 miles ; third day, 268 miles ; fourth day, 271 miles ; fifth day, 280 miles ; sixth day, 290 miles ; seventh day, 305 milea : total, 2,035 miles. And the following are the worst seven consecutive days :— First day, 15 miles ; second day, 70 miles ; third day, 60 miles ; fourth day, 14 miles : fifth day, 64 miles ; sixth daj-,60 miles; seventh day, 08 miles: total, 351 miles. List of vessels spoken: — October 5—12 51 N. lat., 26-2 W. long., English barque Parmenio, from London, bound to Algoa Bay ;19 days out. October 6—l2' N. lat., 2712 W. long., English ship Umgeni, from London, bound to Port Natal ; 25 days out. October 7—ll-30 N. lat., 272 W. long., English ship Ocean Chief, from Cardiff, bound to Singapore ;25 days out. October B—lo8 — 10 N. lat., 27*6 W. long., American ship Now Era, of Boston, from Liverpool to Calcutta ; 30 days out. October 9—7 N. lat., 25-20 W. long., English ship Sir Walter Seotfc, from Liverpool to Bombay ; 25 days out.
