The half«yearly meeting of the New Zealand Insurance Company washeldyesterdayat the company's offices. The half-yearly report was submitted and adopted. A dividend of 10 percent. was declared, andasumnearly£9,ooo was carried to next year's profit and loss account. Three pounds per share is added the paid-up capital of the company. The Council met yesterday for the despatch of buainesa. Mr. Dyer brought on one of the many notices he has on the notice paper respecting his railway scheme between Port Albert and Mahurangi, asking the Government to provide the means to f urnisha ' 'sectional survey"of the line, to see if some easier line could not be discovered. The motion, however, was negatived. Mr. Murray brought forward his motion respecting the abolition of provincial institutions. From Mr. Cadman and others he received a severe chastisement. On the time coming for the orders of the day being called on, the motion was burked. It was afterwards brought on, but finally lapsed. The Estimates were advanced a stage j and the recommendation made respecting Mr. Kellys petition was also agreed to. At the Supreme Court yesterday, the case of Gold "v, Workman and others was concluded. Nearly the whole of the day; was occupied iv hearing the evidence of architects and contractors. -The jury found a verdict for thB plaintiff, damages £259. The case of Horse! all v. Read was partly b,ea,rd, and will be Teamed thin morning.
