MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. Daily Southern Cross Office, Saturday Evening.

Mr. L. TV. Eaton held a sale of timber on Custom - house - street to-day. Second-class timber brought from Cs to 8s the 100 ft. Melbourne. —The Daily Telegraph of the 17th instant reports: — "No change occurred in the markets this morning, and breadstuff's aie still languid. The value of flour cannot be &aid to exceed 121. Is, and some holders would be willing to accept 121. Wheat partakes also of this dulness, and few sales can be reported ; the price ranges from 5s 6d to os 9d, according to the quality. Maize is quoted at from 4s to 4s lAd. It is repoited that the price in Sydney has improved, owing to the late floods. Oats have not met with so much attention lately ; 3s 5d to 3s 7d is about their value. Brau has been sold at Is Id per bushel. Nothing deserving particular attention has taken place in the chief staples ; though we heard of some fair - sued sales to country buyers of tea, ex ' Albyn'a Isle' and 'Isabella Brown,' at from Is 6d to la 9d, and also the quittance of a line of extra superior ex the former shipment. Sugar has been quieter, and we hardly expect to see much activity while the present unsettled weather lasts. Kerosine remains tolerably active, and prioea firm. Candles, though for the present dull, are tolerably well held; about 10] d is still the quotation for Brandon's and De ltoubaix's. Spirits have been quiet, and, with the exception of rum, little notice has been evinced for this class of goods. A sala was made of 200 quarter-casks red wine at from 18/. 10s to 19/. and2(M. More inquiry exists for bulk ale, and Marrian's and Cai-hsle have been in increased request. Bottled sorts are again quiet, and the late noticeable demand has in a great measure ceased." Otaoo. — "We have Dunedin papers to the 22nd. The following is the latest market report: — " The import market continues to wear a very quiet appearance. Wq note a very slack inquiry for liquids. Sugars are scarce and vei y firm ; there are no stocks in first hands, but we hear of some sales among second holders at very full rates. Teas are q'iiet, buyeis waiting for the present ; prices are fairly sustained, and will not be likely to uive way when the new season congous are to hand. Candles are little asked for. Cornsacks continue veiy dull. Woolpacks move at 4s 3d to 4s 4d. The produce market has not been active, and, with the exception of a fair demand for grinding wheat, little disposition to business has been observable ; good lots of wheat are reported as moved at os Gd. CUts are in full supply, and are not quoted over 3a to 3s 2d, with no outside demand. Fine flour moving in moderate parcels. Mill quotation, VM. JQa." Canterbury. — Wo have Canterbury papers to the 24th. The latest market report states : — "A very good inquiry exists for sugars, and higher rates aie obtained. Supplies aie now early expected from Mauritius. The demand for medium and fine teas is improving, but the new season's are expected. Kerosine: 3s 3d is the price now ruling. Candles : Sales of medium-sized parcels are recorded at V2.UI to 12,fd. Cm rants : Sales have resulted during the week at 7d to 7Ad. Cape raisins are very salable at 'Gd to'C^d ; Eleme, at 7d to 7.|d ; i\£<i, afc 8 4 'dto 9jd ; sultanas, at 7.sd to 8d ; woolpacks, at 4s 9d ; cornsacks, 14s to 14s 3d. We can report but little change in the grain inaiket. There are numerous samples of wheat offering, but sales have been few. Holders in store stiJl maintain a firm aspect, while purchasers show little inclination to advance their rates. Good dry wheat in store may be quoted at 4s 6d to 4s 7d, and for forward delivery prices range from 4s 3d to 4s sd. It is difficult to quit inferior samples unless at a considerable reduction. Heavy feed oats are with very little difficulty placed at 2a 6d, j>nd sales are reported up t«2s 7d. Tartarian oat 3 have recently lost favour, and values are far from firm at 2s 3d to 23 4d. Barley remains unchanged in price. Oamaru. — The Oamaru ITimes of the 18th instant reports :: — (f There have been few transactions since our last. Good wheat still maintains the value last given, viz., 4s 6d to 4s lOd. Oats are declining, present value being 2s Sd to 2s lOd, with little inquiry. Barley nominal ; flour, 121. 10s to 13Z. 10s." Timaru.— The Herald of October 19 reports : — "We learn that local buyers are not disposed to operate for wheat at a higher figure than 3s Gd to 4s, according to sample. Oat 3 are dull, and little inquired after, whilst barley is a drug."
