MONTHLY SHIPPING- SUMMARY.
Husiness during I'io ]a*fc month has maintamed its briskness in shippiug tvansactions. The prevailing wmda hive been moderately nne, but with an occasional prevalence of adverse wind;, causing a slight detention of foreign an.l provincial-bound vessels. .Since our last summary we have had twenty-three foreign ami twenty-five inter-provincial amvah. There have been during the same period nineteen foreign and fifteen interprovincial departures • By the arrival of the -ktighsi mail on tin 23rd ultimo we learned that the following vessels have taken their departure fall ships for this port:— On o§SW 2 ?'- th 4 bAr 4" a Kate Waters ;on the 88th, the alup Hua^aina ; on February 10th, the ship Mary yhepherd. The number of Vessels loading were, at London, 2; at Liverpool, 1 j at ttlasgow, 2. The barque Jsnwy has uot yet put i n an appearaiice, though she hfts now bean 132 days ** Be ,a* bavins left Liverpool on Beoember 22, 18b9. The departures for London dttrmg th« month have been, on April 23, thd DArque^ Seatoller, Captain Brown, with a cargo valued at £82,191 Tand on May 1, the >nne Main; Captain Main, her cargo being valued at £41.706. The ships Mallard and Inflexible are oil the berth for London. The former vessel has a considerable portion of her stud* on board ;the Inflexible has just finished discharging inward cargo, and is taking on board her return cargo. The barquo Alice, lm also finished discharging, and will saif for Jhina on .Wednesday next. The Inflexible arrived from London on April 3, after a fair passage of, lOg, day*. same day, aftor a vuu of 10G days from Loudon, oc 102 from Torbay. Duiiug the last few months there has been a marked improvement i n the class of vessels that have arrived in this port from London, and it is to he ho|»ed that Auckland will continue to increase iv importance sufficiently to necessitate the permanent establishment of a line of vessels of * similar class to that of the Inflexible, Alice, City of Auckland, SeatolLer, and Anne Main, and that the merchants here w ill do their utmost to keep such vessels in the trade. From the large amount of support that was accorded to the Wonga Wonga (the first boat of the San Francisco mail route), and the City of Melbourne being also a full vessel regarding passengers, there 19 no doubt but that the line will become a permanent and a tavourite route with travellers, and before long we shall have to look for larger vessels to perform the service at present being perfoiincd by the Wonga Wonga and City of Melbourne.
