TARANAKI. ELECTION FOR OMATA. RETUEN OF MR. CARRINGTON. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

New Plymouth, April 29. The election of a member for the district of Omata lias resulted in the Superintendent (F. A. Carrington) being returned, Avith a majority of seven, the numbers of votea recorded being — Carriugton, 42 ; Carthew, 33. Both candidates, on the nomination day, advocated the policy of the present Ministry, and said thej^ -were staunch supporters. In. fact, the Miuistiy in power are very popular here just nov, and any attempt to push Stafford-cuni-Ttichmond down their throats won't do. There has been a great change in the weather lately. On Saturday last the fine weather we have had for some months bi ok e, and became so bad that the 'Ahuriri,' which arrived in the roadstead with our portion of the English mail on board, had to pass on without landing it, as the sea was too rough for a boat to be launched. The whole of Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, much rain fell heavily ; but Wednesday morning it cleared off, and the day, though cold, was everything that could be wished. The Patea mail arrived on Wednesday, and the Herald has published an extra with the English telegrams. The fall in the price of flax has caused those engaged in this new industry to look vei-y black. No news is good news, so I suppose I must say that everything else is very good here, for I can think of nothing else to tell you.
