POLICE COURT.— Wednesday. (Before T. Beckham, Esq., R.M.)

Drunkenness. —John Brown, John Camp--bell, Myles Nicholson, and Frank Lee were ordered to pay ss. and costs, or to be imprisoned 24 hours. John Sergeant was fined 10s. and costs, or 48 hours' imprisonment; and George Munro was fined 40s. and costs, or 48 hours' imprisonment. Breach of Merchant Shipping Act. — Charles Hamilton, steward of the ' Crest of the Wave,' was charged with wilful disobedience of orders. —Prisoner pleaded that he had only refused to work in consequence of inability through sickness. —Mr Sheehan appeared to prosecute. —Captain Gorm stated that prisoner acted as cook and steward on board the ' Crest of the Wave.' When at Leynkft, Fiji, on Febraary 25, he had bean told to make some paste for meat, but w>a drunk and did not comply. Other oases of insubordination also occurred, — James Grant, mate of the vessel, remembered the 25tU of February, on whioh day prisoner was drunk, and refused to prepare dinner. His behaviour had generally been bad since the vessel left Otago, The captain shoved prisoner aside when he re« fused to do his woik. —The prisoner was sentenced to 13 days' hard labour. Steams Money. —James Walter Arnold was charged with stealing a chamois-leather-bag containing gold to the value of £165, the property of Luke Kenny, of Albert-street. Mr, Brookfield appeared to prosecute, anci Mi 1. Bennett for the defence. On the application of Mr. Brookfield, the case was remanded until to-day at 2 o'clock. Threatening Language. —David Young was charged by his wife Cecilia Young with using abusive and threatening language. The prosecutrix withdrew the charge, and the defendant, after being well lectured by the Bench, was allowed to depart. False Pretences. —James Campbell, who had been I'emanded from the Waikato on the charge of obtaining money by false pretences from Mr Foley, of Tauranga, was tuith,ey remanded to Tauranga. Brkvu of Customs BEfiULATioxs.— The charge against Mr. Lazard was adjourned until Friday j defendant becoming secuuty in his own bond for £100 and two sureties of £50 eaoh, The Court then adjourned.
