THE MANGONUI ELECTION. POLLING IN FAVOUR OF MR. GILLIES.

By the schooner ' Ivanhoe, which arrived ill harbour yesterday from Mangonui and Whangaroa, we have intelligence of the progress of the election at the former place, and the latest account state3 that the election was proceeding in Mr. Gillies's favour. At the election which took place at the Mangonui Couit-house, Mr. Gillie? was pioposed by Captain Butler as a fit and proper person to represent the distiict in the General Assembly. This was seconded by Mr. W. Ball in an appropriate sj)eech Mr. John Lundon \\ as also proposed, and duly seconded. On behalf of Mr. Lundon an objection was taken against the legality of the nomination of Mr. Gillies, on the ground that the name "Mr. Gillies" had simply been proposed, no reference being made to the Christian name and residence of the candidate. A gentleman who came down by the 'Ivanhoe,' and who travelled overland from Mangonui to Whangarei, in order to catch the ' Ivanhoe, ' has kindly given us the latest intelligence respecting the state of the poll which took place on Wednesday last, the day after the depaiture of the 'Ivanhoe.' The returns from Kaitaia had not come in, but at Mangonui the poll showed a majority of 3 in favour of Mr. Gllies ; at Orav'u 3 in favour of Mr. Gillies, and at Oruaiti, 2 in favour of the samp candidate, making in all a majority of eight for Mr. Gillies at the three places named. As we have stated, it was not known how the election had resulted, but at Kaitaia it was be* lieved that it would also return a majority for Mr. Gillies. Our informant states that there had been a great deal of personation praotised ftt the poll. At Oruaiti three distinct oases of personation by parsons voting in opposition to Mr. Gilliss were detected by Mr. Gilliea's agent, who protested in writing against the votes being recorded. In this case the agent ' knew the men whom the would-be voters attempted to personate. At Oruru some | other cases of the same character are said to have occurred, and the ag«nt, Mr. Lemley, * insisted on the administration of the oath, i and the men declined to take it. • ;' Onr informant states that the aupporters of Mr. Lundon at Mangonui had resigned themselves to the proapeot of defeat.
