THE TOKATEA LEASE. (FROM SATURDAY'S "AROCS.")
A meeting of the Excelsior and adjoining claims was held on Wednesday afternoon, to consider a notice in the Gazette pioposmg to grant a lease to the Tokatea Goldmining Company. — The Chairman said he had only just returned from Shortland, whei c he had heard something of the intention to grant this lease. There was a case now pending in the Supreme Court, before Sii Geoi gc Arney, and for the Superintendent to step in and interfere with the Court of Justice was one of the jno-st aibitrary exercises of power which had c* cr taken place in the w orld. It is derivable that legal steps should immediately be taken to counteract such an unprecedented mteifeicnee ■with the functions of tlie Supreme (_\mi t, as also in violation of the goldfield regulations, and that a subscription be at once made to defray all necessary expenses." The resolution was put, and carried unanimously. — Mr. Ross then moved, " That a deputation, consisting of Messrs. Rankin. Moss, Colonel Hamilton, and one from the All Nations, be appointed to wait upon his Honor the Superintendent for the purpose of protesting against the issue of the lease while the case is pending in the Supreme Conrt." — Mr. Biley seconded, and it w.is carried unanimously.
