WELLINGTON. Wellington, February 7.
iues.a. 'Airedale' left to-day -with 400 exouraionwts for Port Underwood and Picton. Nelson telegrams state that sixty pounds weight of stone taken promiscuously from the quartz on the Wangapeka goldheld, yielded 5 ounces 9 dwt. 17 grain* of gold to the ton. fa The gold is visible to tho naked eye. The reef 3 are eight feet thick. The continued dry weather is threatening a scarevcy of cattle feed in the districts around Nelson. Ihe Independent of Saturday states that • the claim of a reward for the discoveiy of a goldfield is founded on the fact that Mr. Bill man, guided by an old Victorian reefer, dug, some few weeks ago, about 501b. weight of quartz from a likely-lookmg reef on the section referred to. This was put into a sack and sent to Melbourne to be crushed. The result of the crushing was sent by the 'Gothenburg,' and showed n return of 2dut. •of gold to the 501b of stone, or 4oy. to the ton. Mr. Billman has, of course, yet to prove that the field is of sufficient extent to be considcie.l payable, and, though somewhat *cepuoal as to his ability to do so, we cannot but think that tho evidence are in hit fni, Q l \r,"
