LATEST FROM TARANAKI. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) New Plymouth, February 2.

Sir George Arney's party, at the Freemasons' Hall, came off last night, and was a decided success. There were nearly 150 guests at it. At the breaking up, the whole of them gathered round Sir George and bade him "good night," as if they had known him for years. At supper Sir George Arney of course presided, and he performed the duties of the part exceedingly well. In reply to his health, he made a most telling speech. He said he had known the people of the province for a period of ten years, and had seen them under trying difficulties, when war was raging on all sides. He had seen the province when enjoying a fictitious prosperity ; and he had seen it suffering from the same ; but still, through all the different stages, he found the inhabitants always the same hospitable Eeople. He had been entertained whenever e had been here, and had been invited to their parties, so he thought, now that peace prevailed in their province, with every prospect of it likely to continue, that he might invite a few of the inhabitants to meet him at a joint gathering. 1 cannot recollect the whole, but I have heard Sir George Arney Bpeak on many occasions, and he never delivered a more telling speech than last night. The Pioneer Steel Company had a meeting •n Monday last.
