CITY BOARD.
Thr usual fortuightly meeting of the Board to »k place at; the office, Canada Buildings, yesterday afternoon at two p.m. Present : The Chairmau (Dr. Lee), and Messrs. Asher, Finlay, Atkin, Macready, Hampton, Bugdett, and dtaiues. Cab Stands. — The Secretary read the minutes of the previous mefting. On the subject of the oab stands, provided for in a former meeting, some discussion took place as to the number of caba allowed to each btand, in which discussion some contradictory remarks passed between Mr. Staines and oue or two other members. The Chiirmaa explained that the arrangement carried out provided for nineteen cabs, which were to be stationed as folio*- : — Six between Fort-street and Shortland-streat ; seven between the Bank of New Zealand and VVyn'lham-screet ; and ihe remainder (n.»mely, six) to be statioued opposite the old Court-house. Lamp at the Music Hall. — A letter was then re.td from Vincent E. Rice, calling the attention of the Board to the necessity of keeping the lamp lighted io Symonds-street opposite the Music Hal!, as it was a dangerous part of the road on dark nightc, and ttereh e re was a good deal of traffic. Otherwise it would be kept lighted at tlie expense of the Board,— Mr, Macready observed tlut this lamp would be wanted principally on such nights when concerts took place, and he thought some arrangement might be come to whereby this lamp might be lighied on these special times ; and this might be done on the ground that these concerts were for the benefit of the public, — Mi\ Stainee spoke strong'y against keeping a lamp lighted for such purposes. If the Music Hall people want-d the light let them fix it to their own meter, and co bear the expense themselves. No rates were paid for the Hall, and he did not see why the ratepayers of the city should be made to pay for the benefit of such pbople. He (Mr. irtaines) had himself propoNed lamps to be placed where they wore needed, and to benefit the ratepayers. But when it came to keeping lamps alight merely for the benefit of a hall for which no rates were paid, he thought it was time to put a stop to it. He suppjsed that Mr. Macready, being interested in the gasworks, wanted as many lamps lighted as he could get. — Mr. Macready denied having anything at all to do with the gasworks, and he objected strongly to Mr. Btaines making 1 personal remarks.- — Mr. Atkin ro&e and said the Board had now been Bitting an hour, and uo business was done. This wastiDg of public time was too common a thing, and lie thought a stop should be put to it. He would not consent to waste time in this way; and if order could not be maintained, and the business gone through in a proper manner, the sooner they went home the better.— Mr. Staines continued, but soon found himself talking to the Chairman only, the other members of the Board having retired.
A soirge, in connection with the Wesleyan Church, Otahuh u, will be held in the Public Hall on Tuesday evening next.'
