OHINEMURI. TE HIRA'S OBSTINACY OVERRULED.
In reference to the nativo meeting which occurred subsequent to that which Mr. Puckey, Civil Commissioner, attended, and <o£ which no reliable information had reached Shortland, the Shor'land Times a»ya : — •' We have been told by an arthority which is indisputable that the Hauhaua Lad a meeting on Thursday, November 4th, and asked Te Hira to withdraw all further opposition to the openiug up of the country, arguing that lie derived some advantage from hia 0 >romandel possession, whilst they had nothing tolook to but their ground at Ohinemuri. Te Hira replied that he would never yield, so lons as he lived. Ei3 obstinacy hasd)3gusted mo* of his followers. Those only luft to him are Mere Kuru and another woman, a daughter of Taraia's : with these exceptions nearly all the Bauhaus are favourable to tho opening up of the country, and will, if nob disturbed by any premature rmb, undoubtedly soon givo in. It is suppoS'-d by those who are well acquainted with the Maori disposition tlub the mccessful results of Mr. McLeau's mis•ion to the Waikato will have n good deal of effect in hastening theaccomplishimnt of the throwing open of Ohineinuri. It is moat probable that Mr. McLean wr.ll visit Obinemuri immediately upon his return to Auckland. Since writiug the above, we have been informed that Te Repa— a most inn 1 lential chief of the Upper Thames — is gong to hold ft meeting to-day. He has declared, with ofcner landholders of the district, that he does not intend waiting for Te Hira to give his ■anotion to th« throwing open of Ohiuemuri, but will throw open ti&eir portion of the laud at once. Te Hira wuhes to hear first what th« Governor and Mr. Mo Lean hare to say about the matter before anything definite is doc*."
