THE OHINEMURI DISTRICT.

This district, ■which is known to be au iferoup, very naturally nossesses a great attraction to prospectors. The Hot). Donald McLean has renewed the negotiitions formerly entered into for opening ibis land, but nothing definite hns been settled ns yet. In the meantime the impatience of the diggera inorf-aees, and they are po eager to try the new country that several personH have already started and are projecting therein. This will very much complicate matters, and perhaps hamper the nesr<>tiitionB now in r 'ogrese. That at least is the view taken by the General Government, and we cannot doubt but that it is * correct one. It is of course illegal to trespass on native lands for mining purposes, and if, as is alleged, thia is being done just now at the Ohinemuri block, Te Hira and his friends have a grievance of which to complain ; and grave complications may thus arise between the Government and the natives. It is not well that anything of the kind should occur, and we would therefore point out to those who are prospecting on the forbidden ground that it tfould be well to withdraw from this work for a time t>U the negotiations now in progress have been completed. It is to be hoped that Mr. McLean wi'l shortly succeed in sunnountinsr all difficulties, and thus be enabled to throw this valuable block open to the mining population of the Thames ; but to give them a fnir chance of success it is absolutely necessary that all private prospecting on the land should in the meantime cease.
