COROMANDEL. (FROM THE " ADVERTISER'S" CORRESPONDENT.) October 23.
You must always go from hom« for news. The announcement that the crushing of the Tokatea'Claim had yielded 800oz. waa news for every one. The remit is not yet known, or 1 should have sent it to you with my la«t letter. As soon as the result is known, I will lose no time in sending it to you. The Long Drive ; Here eight men are em» ployed, day and night, and the work they have done is a credit to them. One leader has been cut about four inches wide, from which the ipecimens hare been taken I hare mentioned in my former letters. I saw a few at the drive yesterday in which gold could be Bean. The Union has a drive entered a depth of 80 feet, aud turned at an angle in order to catch the leaden from the Middle Star. A few small veins have been cut, but no gold has yet been found. The Middle Star has a drive about 90 feet deep. Several small leaders have been out, all more or less auriferous, and a few specimens have been found. The Kapanga : A drive haa been entered on a high level about 50 feet in, but nothing has ytt been found. Another drive has been put in at a lower level. The Matchless : The lower drive is now in 100 feet, aud several small leaders cut. The upper orive has been continued for about 120 feet, and a fine reef cut. Gold has been found in the stone, and a good yield is anticipated whenever it is tried. The Harbour View still continues to improve, and some very excellent specimens have been taken from it. Hibernia No. 2 : A drive haa been put in about twenty feet, and a leader has been cut with a good show of gold iu it. Lake of Killarney : Two excellent drives have been entered, and «everal leaders cut, from which a show of gold hat been got, and which will doubtle&s improve as they are opened. Duke of Leinster : A small leader was out at a depth of 30 feet, from which a few good specimens were taken.
October 25. ! The washing-up and retorting for the Tokatea Claim was not finished in time to send you the result in. my lust letter. The yield has been about 700oz. of retorted gold from about four hundredweight of quartz. The stone in this instance wai again " about" one-half picked specimens and one-half the ordinary run of the leader. It was, therefore, neither a specimen crushing nor a crushing of the atone as taken from the leader. The Crystal Palace : About one hundred weight of quartz was forwarded to GrahamBtown to be tested. I saw a imall button of gold weighing 2dwt. 12gr., which I was informed was the result. A rumour was current that a fine nugget, weighing 3oz,, had been found in or near the Tiki river last week. Is there »uy word of the Warden yet ? He in Madly wanted here.
