THE RESIDENT MINISTER.
A fakagraph in the Haiokc's Bay Times of June 28 states that his Houor the Superintendent o£ Auckland would probably join Fox's Ministry as Resident Minister in Auckland. So far as we are able to judge, this was a mere conjecture, and, whatever may be Mr. Pox'b ultimate arrangement, it scarcely appears probable at present that Mr. Williauisou will bacome .Resident Minister. The Hon. Dr. Pollen arrived by the s.s. 'Wellington' on Saturday, having consented, in compliance with the earnest request of the Hon. W. Pox, to act as General Government Agent until some permanent arrangement has been made. We are only expressing the feelings of the community, we ara Bure, when we say that the step taken by Mr. Fox is highly satisfactory to the people of this province, and it is to be hoped that, if possible, the present arrangemeat will continue- If there waa one thing more than another calculated to reconcile the people of Auck'and to the Stafford Ministry il wag the singularly judicious choice whioh the late Premier made in appointing a Resident Minister for Auckland. Probably no other man could be found in the colony, we believe, who could have discharged the duties in a manner so satisfactory to the community. Dr. Pollen's remarkable buiinesa habits, his minute acquaintance with the affairs of the country, his tact and promptitude in timoi of emergency, and bis uniform urbanity and readiness to oblige," have made him deservedly popular. It is only necessary to refer to the tact which has been displayed in times of emergency to prove how the confidence reposed in the lion. Dr. Pollen's administration has baen justified. At the timfl when affairs on the East Coast were in a critical state, the Kesident Minister acted with such promptitude in chartering a steamer and g»ing down himself with ■upplies aa to avert what would otherwise have been a great catastrophe, and on several occasions when panics have been produced iu the Waikato the limmess and judicious steps taken by the Etsident Minister have restored confidence where any one leas cool and careful might have only increased the alarm and precipitated matters.
