Sinoh the departure of tho steamer few incidents have occurred, and they may be briefly enumerated. Three of the artillery company volunteered for service in the cavalry, and left for the Front,two the day before, and one yesterday. They were Messrs. Spencer, Ford, and another. The 'Jane' arrived yesterday, and, having left Auckland simultaneously with the ' TauraDga, ' of course brought no mail. The period of office at Maketu of Dr. Nesbitfc, R.M., having expired, he left this place for the Front, intending to accompany the troops, attache 1 to the Force, it is fco be presumed. His native servant followed him last night with a stock of medical requisites. The Very Rev. Dr. McDonald, Vic»r-General, arrived here from Auckland by the ' Tauranga on Tuesday, During the passage hence, he held morning and evening prayers for some native passengers ( Arawa). He is making » pastoral visit through the diocese, and purposes celebrating mass in Te Papa on Sunday morning next, aud vespers io the evening. Colonel Hariogton has placed at his disposal a suitable building for religious purposes. The VicarGeneral has visited the beautiful little Catholic chapel at Ofcumoetai, and was very favourably impresse-l with its elaborate and exquisite construction, which, though the work of Maori artificers, would do credit to a highly civilised people. The movements of the troops are not likely to be affected by any recent news, and tho original plan of operations will not be disturbed. A portion of the force will by this time be at Taupo, and another portion probably endeavouring to penetrate the (Jrewera country. The cutter ' Three Sisters ' arrived here the day before yesterday, with a cargo of firewood. A meeting of the Licensing Bench of Magistrates w»s held on Wednesday. It consisted of Colonel Hanngton (chairman), Messrs. Simcox, and Chadwick.J.P.s; and Dr. Nesbitt, R.M. Four licenses were renewed— Mr. A, Cook, Tauranga Hotel ; Mr. J. Couapny, Masonic Hotel ; Mr. W. Morrison, Victoria Hotel, Tauranga ; Mr. F. George, Gate Pa Hotel, and Mr. D. Foley, Travellers' Rest, Maketu. The two last were bush licenses.
