ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

Some members of the committee had an interview with the Provincial Solicitor on Friday, on the subject of shilling licenses, the committee regarding the issuing of such licenses to persons who procured the written authority of the occupier to shoot over his ground as defeating the object of the Act. Mr. Wynn explained that the reference to production of written authority of occupiers of land was meant to meet the case of a proprietor or occupier who himself is not a sportsman, and by the Act is entitled to name one substitute. Only one such iubstitution will be allowed to such proprietor or occupant, and all others having leave to shoot over same ground mast be provided with a fifty-shilling license. A plan and description of the property will also be put upon the back of the shilling-license, and ai the holder must produce it when required the effect will not be so damaging as was anticipated.

A3VT.— One of the best assortments of jewellery that we have seen for some time past is now on view at Mr. W. Hicks's, Vulcan-lane. Th« stock inoludes a very j»reat variety of ornamental and useful articles in gold, silver, and precious stones, and the prices have befen reduced to a very low figure, apparently with the view of compensating for amall profits by a- quick and extensive sale dnnnsthe next weak or two, and while the Prince is in Auckland. Mr. Hicks's stock 13 very tastefully arranged, with the utmost regard to facility of selection. Wo believe that within the past few day* * very large quantity of jewellery has been Bold from this eitabliehment.
