IN COUNCIL ASSEMBLED. To the Editor of the Daily Southern Cross.
Bn,— At the last sitting of the Council, previous to the adjournment, gome edifying sparring took place between the Executive and a member of the Council, when the latter gentleman was anxious to have a note or jotting made, for future guidance, of the words as uttered. These exhibitions on the floor of Chamber do not tend to inculcate that love and affection for provincial institutions which it ought to b* the aim of those really desirous of well-doing to cultivate. Neither do the Executive— gifted with a large proportion of knowledge and forensic ability— me well the talents they are possessed of, seeing that they might do more to conciliate the Council than they do, and not act so much the schoolmaster over the Councillors. Surely no right-thinking man would «r«r pretend to set himself in defiance of the Superintendent and. his Executive, whilst that body worked harmoniously with the Council, and introduced measures well calculated to effect reforms and improvements both in the country and towns throughout the province. If provincial institutions •re to be maintained, let the gentlemen ponder wiselyjwbat amendments can be effected, and, whilst they still belong to the bear garden, let them put a brave shoulder to the wheel, and make this playing at petty parliaments more thaa a childish reality— something out of which ultimately great good may oome. * After the holidays therefore let us see that the Executive and Council can labonr at the work they have |to perform more harmoniously, aud with Jesi biokering and squabbling. There will then be hopes that the session will not have sat in vain, and the country districts willprebably be more satisfied, and bare less reason lor discontent.— Yours, Ac, Pbovbtoiaz,.
