ANNUAL SHOW AND DINNER OF THE NEW ZEALAND AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual show and dinner of the New Zealand Agricultural Society was held yesterday at Mr. Buckland'a yards, Remuera. The day was unfortunate for having a large attendance, as the departure from Auckland of Bishop Selwyn, to whom the people of Auckland had determined to do all honour prevented the attendance of gentlemen from town. As to the show itself, there were many excellent animals in almost all the classes, but still it was disappoiutiug, as uot showing that progress in numbers and quality that might have been expected. Let us hope that there will be a great effort by next year to make this show what it ought to be — a credit and a benefit to the colony. The judges were : — Horses : Messrs. A. Muir, W. Maclauguliu, James Ball. Cattle : W. Buckland, J. Vercoe, John Wallace (No. 1). Sleep : Raithby, Aitkin, Henwood. Pigs : Weatney, Jonas Smith. Shearing: T.-hipherd, Raithby, Henwood. In thoroughbreds there was, as for several years past, but one animal shown, ' Rattan,' which, having been shown for several yean, is well known. A prize was awarded to it. In the second class, of colts, two years old, and under, Mr. McGee exhibited a fine chesnut, to which a prize »vas awarded. In the brood marep, Mr. R. McGee was awarded a prize. There were only two entries. Class 2, heavy draught horses : In section 1, entires, there were five entries, which may be considered a fair number. There was no animal, however, of extraordinary merit. The only entry in section 2 was a colt sent by Mr. W. Motion, to which a prize was awarded. Some of the horses entered were suitable fo,r, roadsters but not for hacks ; consequently the judges requested the committee to allow them to award a first prize for hacks and a first prize for roadsters to Mr. Paul. Two pairs of draught horses were exhibited as extra stock. The prize was awarded to Mr. Bainbriifge. A handsome pony shown was considered worthy of a priza. Cattle : In the shorthorns, section 1, only three bulls were entered ; Mr. Joseph May got the first pnze, and Mr.J.Rowe the second. In section 2, a bull, 16 months old, was successful in obtaining a second prizs only. Another in the same section was not, we presume, deemed of sufficient merit to entitle it to a prize. Section 3 was, we think, the best represented of any section in the cattle classes. There were nine entries, and the judges appeared. to have some difficulty in deciding to which animal they should award the fir^b prize. Ultimately, after a careful examination, Mr. May was awarded the first prizs; and Mr.' Batsett the second, for a cow in fine condition, which, we believe, will , be Bold by Mr. Buckland to-morrow, and probably go to the butcher. Two other entries by Captain Tilley and Mr. C. Shipherd were commended. The Herefords were not « numerous, Messrs. Maclean, who are generally veiy g>od in those classes, not showing any this year on their own account, although some good Herefords sold by them to Messrs. Driver, Maclean, and Co., of Otago, were entered. For cows of any breed, there were six entries, comprising some useful animals. The only animal which gained a prize was one exhibited by Mr. James Wallace, who was also successful in the second class, of heifers. Sheep : In class 1, section 1, Leicesters, there were only four entries, all good animals. The t,wo to which prizes were given were imported about two years ago by Mr. Bassett. The decision come to by the judges last year was reversed, as the sheep which took the first prize then had this year the second place. Of the hog-rams there was * capital show, Mr. May taking the first prize, and Mr. T. Russell the second. Mr. Russell exhibited a number, of fine animals of large siae. In the* Leicesters there was. a marked increase, both ■in the length and quality of the wool. In Lincolns, Messrs. Buckland and May showed some fine animals. We may mention here that Major Jackson exhibited three ewes and two merino rams, which were imported from some of the best breeders in Lincolnshire. Having been shorn, however, within the last few months, it was difficult to judge them in comparison with others. The judges, however, wished the committee to make favourable mention of them. In the Lincoln ewes lambed this season, the animals sent by Mr. Newman were worthy of special mention. The class of longwooU were very good, and the entries were more numerous than last year. It would seem that the Leicesters and Lincolns are approximating every year. The only exhibitor of meriuoes was Mr. J. C. Buckland. There was but a small show of swine, but the animals exhibited were excellent.
