MR. STAFFORD NO STATESMAN.

To the Editor of the Dallt Southern Cross. Sib,— Mr. Stafford has dec.dedly none of the true qualifications of a great statesman, tj which, undoubtedly, he aspires. He possesses, and makes use •f, aumeof the petty juggles and small subterfuges which have at times been made use of by some of our most contemp ible statesmen. He can shelve a dangerous opponent ; he can quiet a political enemy by unfair means ; he can get rid of a powerful rival t>y trickery, and by this means be may for a time keep himself in place and command a party, and that party can ensure him a majority. He can copy the worst features of low statesmen, but even then he copies with a bad haud. He is not capable of an expansive policy for the good of the colony over which he, as Prime Minister, rule. He can only keep himaelf in position by manceu»res and intrigues. He caunot even entertain a liigh opinion of a pulitical opponent, but must act towards him j as a personal enemy. Alltbis bhows the man to be of small mind and stunted judgment, who will never be looked upon as one who ever had the real good of the country at heart. His acts would lead a stranger to suppose him a needy man, to whom the £1,000 per annum is all -important, which I behere is not the case, Mr. Stafford being a rich man. He therefore may exhibit himself as a large capitalist, but a small etatssmaa. This is a perfectly impartial view of the man, by one who has nover spoken to him, and knows him only by his public acts. — I am, &c, ' J. Cbism. Mauku, October 18, 1868.
