THE COURTS. POLICE COURT.— Thursday.
[Before J. H. Horne, Eiq., and K. B. Lusx, Esq., J.P.«.J Drunkenness —Daniel Butt, Elizabeth Lynch, Mary Robinson, George Woods, and Jane Goldsmith were fined for the above offence. Obstructing Footpath. — Thomas Barnes wm fined the nominal penalty of la. and costs, for allowing his horse and cart to go on the footpath in Albertstreet. Joseph Williams was also fined for the same offence. Threatening Language.— Catherine Keats was charged by Mary Elcock with having used abusive and threatening language towards her on the 13th instant, thereby putting her in bodily fear. -Mr. Brock 1 appeared for complainant, and Mr. Hesketh for defence. —Catherine Keats deposed : On the 13sh of October, defendant oame to my house for the rent, which I told her I was unable to pay. She then aaid she would do all iD her power to injure me. T then went into a neighbour's house, and defendant followed me and commenced to abuse me. I am afraid that if defendant i« not restrained she will do me grievous bodily harm.— By Mr. Hesketh : I hare not removed any goods from my house, with the exception of two articles which I sold to pay for the summons in the present case. — Defendant was ordered to find two sureties of £20 each to keep the peace for six months. ( Assault. — Martha Holmes was charged with* assaulting /Ellen Wynn, by shaking a stick in her face. — Mr. Hesketh appeared for defendant. — Ellen Wynn deposed : I reside in Bank-street, and on. Saturday last defendant followed me into the street with a stick and swore that if I struck her children she would' have my life. She then shook the stick in my face.— By Mr. Fiesketh : The assault did not take place on Mrs. Holmes's premises. The stick was one which" defendant used for washing. I did not give defendant any provocation. J did not raise my clothes and turn my back to her. Some time ago defendant made some complaints about me striking her children. I have never struck defendant's children. — M>ry Ann Howard stated that on Saturday she saw defendant with a stick in her hand, holdiog it towards complainant's face. The stick was about a yard from complainant. She did not hear any words. — Ma ia lineon deposed that she was standing at her bedroom window on Saturday, and saw complainant and defendant standing together on Mrs. Holmes's ' premises. Defendant had a potstick with which she was patt-ne; her hand. They were about a yard apart. The only use defendant made of the stick wa& to pat her hand. Defendant afterwards went into her own house, and complainant went up to the window, and from her gesticulations witness concluded that she wanted defendant to come oat and fight. — This concluded the evidence, and the Court considered the case proved under aggravating cir, curastances. The penalty of ss. and costs, or ill default 7 days' imprisonment, was inflicted. ' _ ( Another Case — Richard Rodwell pleaded guilty to a charge of having assaulted .Richard Carter by pulling him by the clothes at Newmarket, on Sunday af (ci noon. Defendant was fined 20s. and costs, with the alternative of 7 days' imprisonment with hard ■ labour. * Ihe Court then rose. . 0
