It is stated that Mr. R. Holland, of Turretfield, has offered to purchase 200,000 acres of land in the Northern territory for £20,000, and survey it at his own cosb. Gold continues to come in from the new diggings ; it is reported that there are 1,200 people at the Barossa diggings, and many of them are finding the claims payable. The barque 'Bengal,' from Otago, Captain Jamiebod, reports having passed a vessel bottom uppermost, about twenty-two miles S.S.E. from Norah dead, not coppered, floating light ; she could be seen two or three miles off, apparently fresh in the water. Captain Jack-on, of the schooner ' Margaret and Mary,' now discharging timber from Maryborough, reports having, when hound to that porb, parsed the • Elizabeth' in the M«ry Hirer on the 15th ultimo, bound for Newcastle, timber-laden, and had a lar«e dtck cargo. October 9. The trial of Louis Doucbefs, for murder, lasted all day ; - he was found guilty, and sentenced to death,

Wollongong, October 6. The new harbour of Wollongong was opened today. The Earl and Countess of Belmore embarked on the 'Thetis,' aud, after steaming towards the Islands, entered the new basiu, when the Countess broke a bottle of champagne, naming it the ' Belmore Basin.' At the lunch following, his Excellency congratulated the residents, and informed the meeting that his friend on his right, the Commodore of her Majesty's ships on this st-itioD, had stated to him that the Wollongong coal, supplied to ships under his command, had proved superior to any other colonial co*l. A large number of well-dressed persons attended, and the harbour was filled with vessels gaily decked with bunting. The Governor aud party left; the Queen's Hotel, for Kiama, about noon.
