Last ereaing a meeting of the settlers of the Whau distriot was held at the Public Hall, for the purpose of electing trustees, striking, a.rate, &o. Mr. Bollard occupied the chair. Be said that his Honor had forwarded to him the Government Gazette containing the notification that the Whau district had been brought under the Highways Act, and denning the boundaries of , the district, r The first buqtaeljs ' before the meeting was the election' of five tru&t'eei ' to act for the current year. < The following gentlemen ( were duly elected :—: — • Messrs. Thomas, tf olfoway, Hamon, Bollard, and •■ Buchanan. ' The next question before the meeting wa« whether ' the rate should be a valuation rate or an acreage rate. ,Mr. Hanson proposed that ( the*, rate^ihoujd-^e ' .levied on the acreage system. ' 4 - , Mr. Thomas seconded the motion. * Mr. Hollowat said by an acreage rate theyi would save a considerable sum" that would be required ■ for assessment if they had a valuation rate. i > Motion put and agreed to. i ' Mr. Thomas proposed that the rate be ninepence ' per acre. Mr. Ringrose seconded the and said he ' thought that ninepence per acre would be as fair a rate as could be levied. ; Mr. Bacon proposed _as._an amendment that the: rate be fixed at Is. per acre. Mr. Sinclair seconded the proposition, and said i it would be getter, to have Is. per, awe. the first year, as 'there was so much to do to th.B roads.
