WEEKLY SUMMARY.
A very strong westerly gale has prevailed throughout tbe week, and we anticipate hearing of damage sustained by shipping. The fine barque Kate Waters, Captain Calder, arrived from Nelson on Sunday, with 163 head of cattle consigned to Mr. J. S. Macfarlane. She will be at once laid on to load with New Zealand produce for London. The Island City is expected from the same port in the early part of next week. The old barque Lorenzo Sabine, Captain flelden, also arrived on Sunday, with 135 tons coals and 50 tons bones consigned to Messrs, Henderson and Macfarlane ; the So* Bree2e and Zephyr from the Bay of Islands, the Huntress from Napier with sheep, the Jane from Tauranga, and the Ivanhoe from Mangonui with 400 cases gum, The schooner Murewai, in onarge of Captain Jones, formerly of the cutter Nautilus, took her departure the same day for Poverty Bay, with a general cargo. On the 6th the favourite steamer Star of the South, Captain BendalL brought up 1 38 head of cattle, the property of Mr. Firtb, from Tauranga. The departures comprised the schooners Herald »nd Tauranga for the Bay of Islands, the Aquila for Pakiri, and the Whitby for Opotiki. The N.Z.S.N. Co.'s steamer Rangatira arrived in this port from the South on 7th instant, with a miscellaneous cargo, obiefly con* sisting of kerosine oil, and 21 passengers, She also brought later Australian news. The Jane, for Tauranga, and Sea Breeze, for .Russell, sailed the same day. The good old ship Racehorse, 1,077 tons, Captain Seward, arrived from London on the Bth, after a passage of 102 days, fraught with great danger. In a hurricane off the Australian coast, lusting three days without the slightest abatement, the ship was in imminent peril. The boatswain, Charles Case, was hurled from the main rigging and drowned. She brings a full miscellaneous oargo,and 20 saloon and 34 steerage passengers. The Star of the South left for Tauranga on Thursday to bring up another freight of Mr. Firth's cattle j the brig Pakeha, Captain .Robinson, fur Mangonui to load with timber, for the Sydney market ; the schooners Sea Breeze, Huntress, and Zephyr, for Russell ; the Iyanhce for Mangonui; the Mar well for Hokianga, via Ahipara; and the Sea Flower for the Bay of Islands, via Tutukaka.
