PORT ALBERT HIGHWAY BOARD. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
On June 29tb, » public meeting was held here, conrened for the purpose of nominating a chairman to preside over the first meeting for the election of Road Board. About forty settlers were present. T. F. Gooch, Esq, J.P., presided. During the discussion on the subject, some dissatisfaction was shown with the Superintendent for dividing original districts at the request of a portion of the settlers only, and without consulting the wishes of the rest ; in the present instance, that of the South Oruawharo district, a more unjust division could not hare been made. In the new district not a single bridge is required on the whole length of the three main roads at present open, while in the remaining portion of the old district there are no less than nine, one of which is more than 40 feet long, and yet a continuation of the road across these bridges is the only outlet by laud for the new district. Apparently, any half-dozen or so of settlers, headed by some one who bas more acres than he likes to pay pence towards road-making, can have a board of their otd. What more can the most inveterate deolaimer against provincial institutions require? Here U local self-gorernment, and no mistake.
