MELBOURNE.

A telegram dated June 5 is to the effect that flour is dull, with no business doing over £21. We have Melbourne papers to the 2nd instant. The Argus of that data reports :—: — In the import markets to-day we note a better appearance of business ; the improvement, however, is monopolised by the chief staples, as complaints of the dullness of trade generally are still ?ery prevalent. Speculative attention has at length been directed towards breadstuff's, and very considerable purchases of both flour and wheat have been effected, advanced rates being established. Some 1,700 tons flour bave been taken up at from £20 to £21, and prices now rule at the last-named figure. Large sales of wheat have also been effected, about 25,000 bushels having ohaaged bands, viz , 19,000 bushels of Victorian, and some 6,000 bushels of Tasmanian and N~6w Zealand, at prices rising from 8s 3d to 8s 6d, and up to 9s. Sales of oats are reported at 3s 7£d to 39 lOd ; at the latter figure about 4,000 bushels New Zealand were placed. Maize is moved off very freely, at 3s 7d to 3s Bd. For candles there is still a brisk inquiry for expott, and transactions embracing some 2,500 boxes of De Roubaix and Brandon's yellow and gold label, at lOd to 10£ d in bond, have been recorded. Tea 3 , in consequence of the disoovery of the discrepancy regarding stocks referred to on Saturday, bave risen more into favour, » brisk demand having been experienced all day from the trade, and some 818 packages, chests, and half-chests, have been taken up for local use and for export, at prices ranging from Is 7d to 2-». Ihe demand entirely runs on Fooehow descriptions, the stock of which has got into extremely narrow compass. There is little doing in sugars. We understand that the * Oberlin'a ' cargo, advertised for sale to-morrow, has to be postponed till Friday, in consequence of not being yet discharged. Kerosine oil continues to be looked after, and, although we have not heard of any actual sales, we learn of Is 7d having been offered and refused for 5,000 cases of Downer's. A parcel of fifteen tons fencing wire— a high number — was oleared out at £20.
