THE PUBLIC MEETING AT THE THAMES.
A full report of this meeting is, while we write, on its way to us. We are verbally informed, however, by a passenger by the ' Tauranga,' that the meeting took! place' at the Theatre—whioh was crowded—on Monday evening. The chair was taken by Albert Beetham, Esq., at 7 o'clock. Mr. Carleton addressed the meeting at some length, and offered his services towards obtaining from the Assembly local selfgovernment for the goldfields district, in whatever form the population might desire, and the administration of their own revenue, subject always to deduction on account of the debt, and charges imposed by law under the Goldfields Act. He was opposed by Mr. Richard Matthews, who Was violently abusive; by Mr. Rowe, "ho was not much less so;' by Mr. O'Keeffe, and Mr. BnokWL : Resolutions were then put to the meeting by members of tha Shortland Improvement Oommittas. ,Tb_i__st.th_Aths.naoplsof tha goldflslds ought to
have the power of administering their own revenue, being misunderstood, was lost. One of the miners jumped on the platform, and said, " Boys, you did not know what you wera voting; " whereupon there was a call to " put the question again." The Chairman was of opinion that he could not put it again ; but an even stronger resolution, differently worded, was moved by Mi. Robert Graham, and carried by acclamation. Several amendments were negatived, or withdrawn. It was also resolved that, if the prayer of their petition to the Assembly should fail of effect, the Governor should be requested to revoke the dtlegation of powers to the Superintendent, and to resume them himself. The proceedings terminated with a vote of thanks to Mr. Carleton, and with another to the chairman.
