The Court objected to the question in that ■h*P* Mr. Pox j Did you ever hear any proverb abort Parakaia, common among the natives on this coast? Batana: Ye: Mr. Fox: What was it? Ratana : It «i this : If a louw falii from Pantkaia'a head, he claims the land it falls on; and where he spits, that he also claims. (Great laughter.) By the Court : I heard this proverb a long tune ago— it is known to all the Maoris. I did not hear ie first from a white man. I think I heard it firht from Hunia. Mr. Fox, addressing the Court: If the Court wishes to know the origin of the proverb, I believa we shall be ablo to show it. We have a witness to call who ought to be a good authority ; his name i« Solomon, and we shall put him in the box by and-by.
