FATAL ACCIDENT TO MR. E. MALCOLM.

Mb. Edwasd Malcolm:, . ssilmaker, _ Lower Queen-streefc, was killed last 'night by falling down the stairs leading to [his sail loft. Mr. Malcolm has been in business for several years, and it will be remembered occupied the premises above Mr. Nicols, when, the block of 'buildings in Lower Queen-street was burned down. Since the erection of the present building!, Mr. Malcolm has rented the upper part of one of the stores, the lower floor being at present occupied by Messrs. Harris and Laurie. Mr. Malcolm working last night till a little past eight o'clock. He had in the loft with him his eldest boy, named James, who is about eleven years of age. The boy states that when they ceased work j his father blew out the candle, and they , both went to the top of the stairs leading from the loft to the ground floor. The boy says that he had hold of his father, who when he got to the first step slipped from him, and he heard him fall heavily to the bottom of the stairs. The boy then came down to the lower flat, and found his father lying at the foot of the stain. The only sound he heard from him wai like a gurgling in the throat. The boy says he remained beside hit father in dark for about half an hour, and then he ran home to Graham-street and told his mother what had happened, not liking,' as he says, to Seak to anybody elie,for he did not know them, rs. Malcolm at once ran down, and found her ' husband lying at the foot' of the itairs, no person having entered the store during the absence of the boy. Mrs. Malcolm sent for the police, 1 who soon came, bringing Dr. Nicholson, of « Shortland-street, who at once said that life was extinct, and that even if he had been called immediately after the accident he. could have done nothing, as the neck had been broken by the fall. A stretcher was then got by the police, and the unfortunate man was carried Tiome. Mr. Malcolm was a respectable citizen, and was perfectly sober at the time! of the accidents .' He leaves a widow and six ohildren. An inquest will be held to-day. _". -«.•-•
