OUR GOLDFIELDS.

Th£ Midge,' made • apecial trip from the Thames eartyon March 1 with about 800oz. gold from Hunt and Co. 's olaim, which was lodged at' the Union Bank. A parcel of goli,i containing, several pounds weight, was received in. town on March 4, by the s.B. 'Tauranga, 1 from Mr. Tookey's claim at the Thames. The 8.8. ' Tauranga arrived on March 5 from the Thames. She brought up a parcel of 600oz , 4620z. of which were the product of 2251b. weight of stone from the Manukau claim, adjoining Mulligan's and Williamsons t laims on the Moanataiari and Waiotahi creeks. The stone was crushed at the Kuranui Company's machine, under the personal superintendence of Mr. Bleazard. The fortunate owner of fcbis claim is Mr. John Cook, of Onehungayand parby of three men. It appears that there will not be any further returns of g'dd for the next two or three months from Hunt's Claim, Karaka— in fact, until they have prooured and erected a crushing-machine on their own ground. It ia the intention of Mr. Hunt to leave Auckland for Melbourne by the first opportunity, to purchase a machins built with the latest improvements. On March 10, another very rich leader was struck, o£ which we have seen a splendid specimen. The B.s. ' Tauranga,' which aame up on March 7, brought a parcel of 1500z., the product of Messenger and Co.'s claim, which, was lodged at the Bank of New Zealand. The 'Peter Cracroft,' which arrived on March 7, brought up 130oz. of gold from the Kapanga Gold Mining Company's claim at Coromandcl. The s.s. ' Tauranga,' which arrived on March 12, brought up 1260z. 13dwt. 17gr. of gold from the Thames goldfield, the product of 3£ tons of quartz crushed at Soanlan's machine, from the Eising Sun Claim, Waiotahi. We were shown on March 16 a sample of 13 dwfc. 3gr. of gold, the product of 1001b. of quartz from a new claim on the Karaka, named the Tradesmen's, wotked by Messrs. Crisp, Hunt, and party. Stone from another rich claim on the Waiotahi creek, called the Fear-nought, was tested on March 14, with, very promising results. We are 'informed that lcwt. of stone was crushed in the Carpenters' Berdan, and 44£nz. of gold extracted. The lucky shareholders of this, claim are Messrs. Headley, WalliP, Douglas, Burke, and Lipsey. By the ' Peter Craoroft,' which arrived on March 14, from Coromandel, a passenger brought up 54 ounces of retorted gold, the -product of 71b. weight of stone taken from the Nil Desperandum claim, which adjoins the Kapanga Company's claim, but ' situate higher up the ranges, and on the main creek. The s.s. ' Tauranga,' which came up on Saturday, Mftroh 21, from the Thames, brought a parcel of 103 ' ounces of gold, the result of a crushing of five tods > of quartz from the Pai Marire Claim. The | quartz was crushed at -Messrs. Ellis and Scanlan's machine. The steamers 'Taurangfc' and ' Midge ' returned ! from the Thames on M arch 25. By the former vessel the Bank of Australasia havereceived 240z. gold from i the Star of the South Claim, the product of 17 tons , qu»rtz crushed at Scanlan and Co.'s machine. Hdlloway and Middletoo, of the Lord Nelson Claim, on i Karaka Hill, have crushed 5 tons at i Gibbons's | machine, with a result of 320z. retorted gold, or nearly 640z. to the ton. The p.s. « Enterprise' returned from ihe Thames ' on Thursday,March26, with passengers and6ooounces i of gold, the product of Kelly and Co.'s claim. Pai Marire Claim, Moanataiari,' crushed five tons of quartz at Messrs. Ellis and Scanlan's machine, ■ and obtained lOOoz. of gold. They are now crushing , about 20 cons from the Star of the South Claim, i which, unless appearances deceive, will yield from Boz. to lOoz. per ton. T A small parcel from the , Shamrock gave 2oz. to the ton. The tailings from some stuff from the Rising Sun Claim, crushed at ! this machine, were tested, but no signs of the pre- , cious metal were discernible, though the quartz from | this claim gave 15oz. to the ton. ' 800 ounces of gold, received from the Thames, were j lodged at the Bank of New Zealand.on March 28. We understand that T 4570z. lOdwt. of retorted j gold was lodged in the Bank of New Zealand.on March 28, irooa^the Long Drive claim, K*E*k» f to be assayed.
