MEETING OF FEIRNDLY SOCIETIES.
A HXGILY'ATTINDID meeting of officers and memben of the various friendly societies in Auckland was held last evening, at the Odd Fellows' Hall, to toko into consideration an advertisement appearing in the local papers, signed by Mr. John Ogilvie, soggeiting that the friendly societies should take part in the public reception of his Excellency the Gorernor. m Mr. George Leabey vu elected chairman, and Mr. Derrom secretary. The officers and members present were of opinion that the Reception Cemmittee had treated them very cavalierly in not forwarding to the officers of the ▼arious lodges any intimation of the proposed msetinsr, or giving any notice of the meeting, except through the daily papers. The following resolutions were then unanimously agreed to: — "That, notwithstanding that we disagree as to the manner in whioh we hare betn invited by advertisement, signed 'John Ogilvie, hon. secretary,' to participate in the demonstration for the reception of his Excellency the Governor on his arrival in -Auckland, we agree to assist in the proposed demonstration. 1 ' ... ** That the officers of the various friendly societies be requested to cause a notice to be iuued calling upon the members of eaoh order to attend at the Government lawn, and assiat in the reception of his Exoelleney the Governor." "That Mesm. Lewis, French, Mason, Hogg, Leahey, Seabrook, and Derrom be a deputation to attend at the meeting of the Reception Committee on Friday afternoon. ' l ~ "That tiheOieoretaTy be requested to forward to his Honor the Superintendent, chairman of the Beoeption Committee, uopies of tbe foregoing resolutions." A vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman, and the offioers and members then dispersed.
A lamentable occurrence happened on board the \ barque Elisabeth daring her passage from Mauritius ] to Melbourne, where she armed the other day. She left Port Louis December 15, and the day after fell in with ft terrific hurricane from N.N. W., afterward* reeling to 8.8. W. The barque was kept bet ore it, and whilst running WM^ooped by a terrifio sea, that washed the helmsman and chief mate (Mr. James Boid) orerboard. The' former Bared himself by cling* ing to the main brace, but Mr, B«i4 wai lost.
