ROYAL RECEPTION COMMITTEE.
To the Editor of the Dailt Sqtjthwn Cross. Sib,— Having observed in your issue of this morning a ieiter from an officer of one of the frieadly societies, making certain inquiries with reference to correspondence between myself and the friendly societies, and in compliance with the suggestion made in the note appended by you, I have much pleasure in enclosing, herewith a copy of the correspondence referred to. A« I hare not yet received the information I asked for (Mr. Osmund Lewis not having had power delegated to furnish me with a list of the representatives of the friendly societies), and u I am not aware who their chief officers are, I shall bo glad to receive the information from your correspondent, in order that they may be communicated with. As Mr. Osmund Lewis had forwarded to me a copy of the resolution with reference to the action alleged to have been taken by the Keception Committee, in regard to the friendly societies, which had been adopted at a meeting, as he stated, called for the purpose (by public advertisement), and of which meeting he signed hiuaselfjgiairman, I considered td&t he was the proper parly to oomtnunicate wifcnjwnd I expected, that any correspondence on the subject would he submitted to the parties who had instructed him to communicate with me, iu^ order thai; any misunderstanding that had arisen night at once be put an end to. — I am, &c, John Ooilvie, Secretary Royal Reception Committee. Sir,— l bave the honour to Acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 13th. current, forwarding copy of a resolution passed »t a meeting held at the Courtroom, British Hotel, with reference to the action of thfl Reception Committee towards the frieudly societies, and jto inform you that the same was submitted to » meetiDg of the Execntive Committe»Wjd yesterday, when the following resolution was adoptedT to which I beg to refer, viz. : — " That the Secretary be instructed to acknowledge the receipt of Mr. Lewis's letter, and to inform him that the societies alluded to are labouring under a complete misapprehension as to what took plaoe at the meeting referred to ; that it was the intention ! of the Reception Committee that all the public bodies should be represented at thcureoeption ; that special ] localities should be assigned to them ; and that, before the proposed arrangements were completed, these bodies should be communicated with and their co-ojftiration asked,"— l have, &c, (Signed) Jomr Ogilyie, Secretary Royal Reception Committee. Sir, — In reply to your letter of yesterday's date, in which you request me to famish you >( with a list of the names of the representatives of the various friendly societies, in order that they may be added to the Royal Reception Committee, with a view of their assisting in making the necessary preparations for the reception of his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh," I beg to inform yon that, as Ibaven«t bad the power delegated to me by the various friendly societies tofurnishyou With the required information, I cannot take upon myself that responsibility; but, in order that the names of such representatives may be ascertained by you, I suggest that you forward a communication to the chief officer of each Society. Auckland, December 24, 1867. Sir, — I beg to inform you that, at the quarterly meeting of the members of the 1.0. E., it was unanimously resolved that the District Chief Ruler, the District Deputy Ruler, and the District Secretary be the representatives of the Independent Order of Hechabites on the Royal Reception Committee ;n; n connection with the anticipated arrival of H.K.H. the Duke of Edinburgh. I annex the names of the above-named officers :— District Chief Ruler, J. M. French; District Deputy Ruler.
