FUNERAL OF THE LATE LIEUTENANTCOLONEL MATSON.
On the 3rd October the funeral of the late LieutenantColorel Matson, formerly major in her Majesty's 58th Regiment, took place at St. Stephen's Cemetery, Parnell. As was natural, the remains of so old a colonist, and one who was so much respected during his lifetime, were followed to the grave by a very large number of his surviving friends. Among th e number ire noticed Colonel Balaeavis, Major Cooper, Major Tighe, Captain Brophy, Captain Dinnin, Captain Mitchell, Dr. Philson, and many veterans of the 58th Regiment ; also Colonel Beatson, R. E. ; F. Ibbetson, Esq., A.C.G. ; J. Gallagher, Esq., D.A.C.G. ; W. G. Hamley, Esq., Military Store Department ; the Rev§. T. Chapman, B. T. Dudley, G. H. Heywood, Dr. Maunsell ; C. H. Mclntosh, Esq., Auckland Militia ; Captaia Guilding, Naval Volunteers ; Sir William Martin ; Hon. J. Salmon, M.L.C. ; Dr. Goldibro', Messrs. John and William Buckland, juniors (nephews of the deceased, chief mourners), Baber, Coolahan, Dunn, Field, Grahame, Johnson, King, Ki&sling, Lambert, Lodge, Pike, Ridings, Robinson, Speight, Woodhouse,&c. The pall was borne by the military officers above mentioned. The first part of the burial service, in St. Stephen s Chapel, was impressively read by the Rev. Edward H. Heyvrood, and the second part, at the grave, by the Rev. Dr. Maunsell. Colonel Matson entered Sir G. Shiffner's troop of yeomanry cavalry, Lewes, Sussex, in 1811 ; in 1813 was appointed ensign in the East Kent Militia, and served in Ireland with that regiment. Served as lieutenant in the 7th battalion 60th Regiment in Nova Scotia ; afterwards ia the 3rd battalion in North America for five years ; joined the 22nd Regiment in 1823 ; went with the regiment to Jamaica, and remained there from 1829 to 1837 ; gazetted captain, 1838 ; joined the 58th Regiment in 1840 ; embarked for Sydney in charge of convicts ; came from Sydney to Hew Zealand in command of a detachment in H.M. s. ' North Star,' Sir Everard Home, captain, in March, 1845. After five years' service, during which, as Deputy- Assistant-Quartermaster-General, under Colonel Despard, he took an active pari in subduing Heke's rebellion in the North, he retired from the army in 1850, after 37 years' service. From that date op to the period of his death, he resided at Parnell, and disp'ayed much energy of character as Commissioner of Crown Lands under Sir George Grey, as member of the Provincial Council during several sessions, and as an active Justice of the Peace. He died at Brookside, ParnelL on the Ist October, leaving a widow and one daughter to lament their lo»s.
