THE KARAKA GOLDFIELD.
Oub own correspondent writes on October sth, from Shortland Town:— "l have to report continued success in the quartz claims already known to be payable; and, further, the discovery of a reef situated above the Kuranui, on the Pukekohe Creek, eight feet in width. The prospector brought a sample of his gold into town this morning. The quality is good— the quantity better. So far as 1 can form an estimate of the stone as regards solidity, I should say it is a main reef. What we require here now is machinery. I walked round the ground yesterday, and saw Hunt's and Barry's parties working a stamper, with a Berdan machine to receive the crushed quartz. The gold is then amalgamated with quicksilver. In Hunt's box I saw a quantity of amalgam, as also in Barry's." Thes.s. 'Midge' and 'Tauranga returned from the Thames on October 9, but brings no further news, work being partially at a standstill, owing to the want of machinery. The • Midge ' brought up 75 oz. of gold.
