HOWICK. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

October 9. Osr Tuesday evening last, the adjourned meeting of the ratepayers of the Howick Highway District took place at Brady's Hotel. The first meeting was adjourned from the previous Tuesday, owing to there not being sufficient electors present, in accordance with the 12th clause of the new Highways Act. The chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr. James White, presided, and informed the meeting that they had met for the purpose of electing new trustees and levying a rate for the ensuing year. He then proceeded to read over the accounts, but these were far from giving satisfaction to the majority of the meeting present, although the Chairman declared a balance of £10 ss. 6d. in hand, and a. considerable sum uncollected. A good deal of amusement waB occasioned by one or two persons present wishing to address the meeting, but they were objected to, aB having no vote, owing to nothaving paid their rates. Mr. Jackson made an objection to the holding of the meeting, as he stated it was illegal ; but he was informed by the chairman that the meeting was held in accordance with the 12th clause of the Highways Act, and business must be proceeded with. Messrs. Mackay, Jackson, Crewe, Dunn, and Mclnnes were elected trustees for the ensuing year. Various rates were proposed, but ultimately one of a penny per aore was carried. On Wednesday evening a meeting of the newly-elected trustees, appointed on the previous night, waß held at Mclnnes's Hotel ; but owing to the obstinacy of the late chairman in refusing to give up the books, .vouchers, &c, little business was done. Mr. J. J. Jackaon was appointed chairman for the ensuing year, and a letter was signed by the whole ot tne trustees, demanding the booki, &c, of James White ; but he still refusing to give them up, the chairman was instructed to take full legal proceedings against him, under the 21st clause of the Highways Act, for their illegal detention. .
