WAIUKU. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) October 5.
On Thursday last, the 3rd instant, our spring market was held at the usual place. Nearly 200 head of neat cattle were penned and sold by Messrs. Hunter and Buckland, besides sheep, horses, pigs, &c. Prices were quite as high as at Newmarket, and in a few cases, for choice lots, a shade higher. A pen of 90 ewes and lambs averaged 275. 6d. Pigs were cheap and plentiful. All agree that it was the best market yet held at Waiuku. One feature is to be remarked: several of the immigrant settlers were purchasers of dairy cows, a sure sign that the distress so lately prevalent among them is on the decline. At the meeting of the Agricultural Society, it was decided net to hold a cattle and produce show this season. There will be a meeting of the Flax-Hackling Society on Wednesday next, and immediately after the various companies formed here will get to work. The Eev. J. Whewell announces that the Wesleyan anniversary will be held on the 14th and 16th instant ; and the annual soiree of the Waiuku Literary Association will take place on the 17th, at Campbells Hotel.
