MAURITIUS.
The Mauritius correspondent of the S. M. Herald, under date 6th August, writes as follows :—: — The health of the population of the island has fnrther improved since the death of my last letter, and things altogether look much more cheerful. Business has lesumed its former activity, and much more confidence exist-, among commercial classes. The sugars of the new crop began to arrive in town some weeks ago, but they come to hand slowly. The principal shipping houses to the Australian colonies have been buying up a good deal of last crop's produce for shipment, as they cannot get sufficient of the new yield to complete their cargoe?.
The quantity of sugar to be made this season is yet expected to reach. 100,000 tons. The demand for some articles of Australian produce is good. One specially deserving mention is flour. Importations of the latter have continued small, less than 2,000 bags having arrived from all quarters since my last. Australian flour, of good quality, has been sold at 5 dollars per 1001b« ; and some rather inferior to the above fetched 4 dollars 50 cents. Our stocks are now very small, .and prices appear likely to advance again. Tallow : Some small parcels, in casks, have been sold at 16 dollars per 1001b., and this late may still be considered current, though, as the consumption of thisarticleiwill very much decrease when the sugar mills have ceiled working, prices may be expected to decline. Freights have improved a good deal. The rate ruling for Londdn is now £2, at which freight two vessels are loading. 11 anas per bag has beea accepted by the * Alexandra,' fcr Bombay. For Melbourne or Sydney, charters are yet made for lump sums equal to 25b per ton. - One or two sm»ll vessels have been loaded for the Cape witbin the last fortj night, at 30s to 35s per ton.
