The Ceylon Railway was opened on the Ist; of August. New roads are projected, and carried out ; a Urge proportion of the revenue is devoted to roads and irrigation works in the supply bill. The coffee planting reports are •atisfactory. The apprehension of a dearth of rice from Bengal is alleged. The pearl fisheries are not paying. The Government medical staff is largely increased. There is great dulneu in import!, but more activity in exports. Coffee : Plantation, 11s. 6d. per bushel ; native picked and 'dried, 4i. Bd. per owt. Freights : Coffee, euks, £3 155. ; bags, £3 j oil, £3 fis. Exchange : 4 months, half per cent, discount.
