PROSPECTING AT KARAKA. -PUBLIC MEETING.

It will be seen, by advertisement, that a public meetiag is to be held to-day, «,t Mr. Cochranes rooms, Port-street, at eleren o'clock, at which Captain Butt will make a statement in reference to the progress made by the prospectors on Karaka flat. We trust there will be a good attendance, because the prosperity of Auckland is deeply bound up in the success of the Thames goldfield. We may state that there are now twenty-four men employed sinking two shafts, with the view of bottoming the ground. They are working night and day ; and, having timber for slabbing on the spot, the progress in future will be more rapid than it was heretofore. The men simply receive rations and timber, the subscribers advancing these to enable them to test the ground sufficiently. Should gold be struck, these advances are to be a first charge on the claim. The men appear willing to take this risk, and the subscribers' money is being most economically disposed 'of. Yet there is a deficit, and it is Captain Butt's intention to suggest the formation of an Auckland committee to , assist ithem in fairly? bottoming these shafts: The matter must commend itself to every intelligent man in Auckland. iAs we have said, we trust the meeting will be largely attended. 1
